This is the remnants of a star that exploded. (SN1006) The explosion was witnessed in spring of the year 1006. It was a Type 1a supernova. The explosion was 7,100 light-years away.

Awesome image of the sun as it releases a CME. (Coronal Mass Ejection)



A closer look at the CME with an image of Earth added to scale.



Saturn with one of its moons (Titan) in front.



Part of a vast dark cloud of interstellar dust known as the Pipe Nebula. All those little colored dots are either stars or entire galaxies. Yeah, there are a lot of them and this is a very very small region of the entire sky!



The Hubble Space Telescope has taken some awe inspiring images.

This stunning National Geographic photo contest winner shows an F-15 banking at an airshow and an array of great fluid dynamics. A vapor cloud has formed over the wings of the plane due to the acceleration of air over the top of the plane. The acceleration has dropped the local pressure enough that the moisture of the air condenses. Some of this condensation has been caught by the wingtip vortices, highlighting those as well. Finally, the twin exhausts have a wake full of shock diamonds, formed by a series of shock waves and expansion fans that adjust the exhaust’s pressure to match that of the ambient atmosphere.

The image below shows a superbubble in the star-forming region LHA 120-N44 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Massive stars in the cluster NGC 1929 at the centre have vigorous stellar winds and end their short lives as supernovae; their winds and shocks carve out the superbubble of hot gas emitting X-rays shown here in blue, using data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. Yellow colours indicate visible light – from the MPG/ESO 2.2m telescope – from hot young stars, and infrared radiation from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, in red, indicates cooler dust. Combining multiwavelength images in this way highlights X-ray emission from the superbubble walls.
