Default Dallas vs NFL Pass Protection (endzone cam)

Plays start at the frame the center moves and advance in .5 second increments until the ball is released/qb sacked/end of play. So you can calculate the release time of passes, how long until the QB moves from his spot, how long it takes for a blocker to be beat, etc. to within half-second accuracy.

Use left/right arrow keys to nav left/right.

It seems to be that the other teams especially the Patriots get their ball out really fast. Brady doesn't wait around long for routes to happen, the ball is already gone from his hands. On the other hand, our routes it seems take an eternity to happen. And most of the time Romo throws it to the dump off man or to his 2nd or 3rd read. Is it because were having a hard time getting open? Or is it the plays being called that is taking too long to manifest?

Or is Romo taking too long to go through his reads?

Not exactly. Based on 3-4 plays posted the conclusion is that romo may be taking too long to release the ball? Wow. I can show you at least 50 plays where Aikman threw an interception.... I guess he was inaccurate. I can show 50 plays where Barry sanders and emmitt looked like they couldn't compete on the high school level. I guess that must mean they can't find the holes in the defense.

Interesting.

It seems Brady gets rid of the ball much faster than Aaron Rodgers or Romo.

LOL Relax man. This isn't some sort of scientific study thats going to change the world. Were basing it on what we've seen so far compared to other QBs. So far all I said Romo seems to be holding onto the ball too long. For reasons why I don't know.

I noticed though with Rogers is that he doesn't stay in stationary too often. He bounces around in the pocket quit a bit.

It also seems in the 2nd half (I think) they used alot of boot leg and play action. Which brings me to assume that Rogers buys times with his mobility and moving out of the pocket like Romo.

But yeah I agree that Brady gets the ball out quicker than both Romo and Rogers.

Romo struggles to get the ball to his wrs early, this has been the knock for 2 years now. The receivers get a step, but Romo won't make the throw, if he does throw it, usually you'll see the ball sail high out of bounds.
By the end of 2014 Romo will not be starting for the cowboys and the most popular phrase on the board will be..."see I knew we shouldn't have signed him to that big contract".

Look at the second set of Cowboys vs Bears plays and take a look at how well the stretch play action pass worked... Two TE set strong to the right side. Stretch play action and a wide open (looks like Dez) WR crossing behind the out of position LB.

Seems to me based on the small sample size of one game, that the two TE set when passing makes it much harder to disguise your pressure... Especially if you are playing man under coverages.

Also note how many WR's New England has crossing the middle of the field as opposed to outside the numbers...

This has been a problem in our offense for a few years now. We fail to utilize our speedy WR's across the field, thinking we can only utilize it down the field. All of our completions over the middle are deep crosses 10-12 yards. We don't run drag routes, quick slants from the slot position or two TE passing sets enough to put pressure on the short middle of the field. It's like we clear the short middle out for Murray, and then never throw it to him there anyway.

We also lack a true slot receiver who can pressure the third corner of the opponents defense. How many times have we watched Steve Smith (NY at the time) abuse Scandrick from the slot. How often do the Welker/Amendola types absolutely kill a defense from the slot? Miles can do it, but we chose to run him deep from the slot far too often.

The biggest thing I take out of this is that our pocket seems to be collapsable and chaotic. My guess would be that it makes it very difficult to trust your protection and just do your job - aside from the chaos in your face you're probably learning to be on the lookout to get blasted, fumble, etc...whcih leads to at some point "hero" throws because what else you going to do. But that's been the case here since 2009, its just that the line has gotten worse, not better.

It seems like when we rush, and those other pockets protect, the pocket doesn't collapse as a matter of practice, but rushers are pushed outside, including the interior, giving a sense of a pocket and (the key thing) if it a reliable pocket, the QB can trust it and focus. The other thing I never realized is how muddled our throwing lanes are compared to the others.

Brady seemed like a unique animal, they do a lot short routes to just get it out, and then take chunks downfield. But I've seen many Pats games where he can literally just stand there flat-footed.

I think any of the top QBs in behind our line would get crushed and it would mess with their head. The best suited for it seem to be Rodgers and Romo fortunatley enough. I think if we somehow mastered short routes, slants, etc. (not sure if you can build a gameplan around that) using big bodies like Austin and Bryant, that could be a trick. But I know countless people have harped on that wish, so we must not know something Garrett and Co do (which would make sense, since this is their job)

Can't tell much about the WR routes, although I know our philosophy is downfield routes (which i like if we could block for it).

my 2 amatuer cents.

This just ridiculous. Romo has one of the quickest releases in the league. It's the wide outs who need to get opener faster. They all struggle to get separation especially Dez Bryant.
