Default Carolina fires GM

The Carolina Panthers announced Monday morning that general manager Marty Hurney has been relieved of his duties.

The move came a day after a 19-14 loss to Dallas gave Carolina a 1-5 start despite it having one of the league's higher payrolls. The Panthers' record is the worst in the NFC.

A GM gets fired for not producing results?

What kind of business model is this?

Mistake, in my opinion.

Get the new guy in there so they can start scouting for the spring's draft.

What new guy in mid season though? The hot name will be Eric DeCosta in Baltimore. They'e not going to let him go right now, so they are going to fly without a GM for the rest of this year most likely.

I'd rather fly sans GM and just let my scouting department operate independent of that leadership than continue with Holmgren at the helm.

Can you imagine how much better off the Browns would've been with RGIII? Idiots.

At what point is RGIII out for the season though? He isn't a running back and isn't conditioned to take the pounding a running back takes. With him running as much as he is, at some point he is going to get creamed. Not to mention concussions. Hell, he has already had one concussion this season. I suspect if he continues running, he will have a short career.

Jerry Jones in the draft room is suicide on the football field. The line of scrimmage is EVERYTHING. Something Jerry doesn't understand.

I got ya. I was still talking about Carolina. He for sure is out.

I suspect Joe Banner will assume that role in Cleveland so I wasn't even thinking about them.

Panthers are the only team in the NFL without back to back winning seasons. Hurney has been there since Polian went to Indy. That's a long time of not building upon success.

Panthers fans have been wanting him out for years. They wiped out their team beside a very few players during the lockout. The defense has been bad for years. The team is in shambles.

Texans?

I know they probably erase that this year, but wasn't last year their first ever winning season? Or did they go 9-7 or better in 2010 and I am just spacing it off? I could have sworn they were sub .500 until last year.

Well 8-8 isn't losing. The Texans have at least had back to back without losing records. Perhaps that's how I should have worded it.

EDIT: However, I think Atlanta was the only other team at that point with a similar circumstance. The Texan were either 9-7 or 6-10 that year. Can't remember exactly. I know last year they were 10-6.

Well if that is the case then Carolina did go back to back without losing records 05-06. The sad thing is the Falcons haven't had back to back winning seasons until Smith came in and they been in the league for 40 years.

So perhaps I did mean winning. So them and the Texans. I stand corrected thanks.

That's pretty shoddy for a team that played in a recent superbowl and went to another NFCC game.

Texans lost to the Ravens and it was not a good game...( Flacco and the Ravens are not anything special).

Not to quibble, but we are both wrong on those parameters. 2009 Houston was 9-7. They were 8-8 the year before in 2008.

Carolina was 11-5 in 2005, then 8-8 in 2006. Then 12-4 in 2008 and 8-8 in 2009.

Either way, not near good enough. I still don't see firing him in Mid season when they can't really go after a suitable replacement. Maybe they hire within.
