Default Jerry Jones: Benching Romo 'not practical'

Tony Romo has thrown more interceptions than any other NFL quarterback through the first eight weeks of the season. Some probably believe the Cowboys' starting quarterback should be benched.

But it's not that simple. Romo's turnovers haven't all been solely his fault, and there is no guarantee backup quarterback Kyle Orton would have better results with the same group.

There's not a clear determination of what it would take for head coach Jason Garrett to bench Romo. Despite Romo's nine interceptions in his last two games at Cowboys Stadium, the Cowboys' owner, general manager, executive vice president and head coach all publicly have supported him, so it appears Romo is not close to being replaced in the starting lineup.

"Tony is a starting quarterback and a quarterback that the team, candidly, is built around, (and it's) about as indispensable of a situation as you can (have)," Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Friday on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. "And it is not practical to say, ‘We're going to bench you.' That usually isn't practical. You can look at teams that are dealing with that right now, publicly. So what do you do? You work from within.

Default What did he say?

"I've lived a life to where I've always worked for myself, and I've been fortunate because that's what I wanted to do. Well, then you don't fire yourself, or otherwise, get out of business. What you do is look in the mirror and make changes within the mirror. And that's doable."

Even though I agree, it isn't your call Mr. Jones.

I don't see much benefit in benching him.

I wonder if you'd be around to say you were wrong when that guarantee didn't go your way.

I'm not saying it wouldn't, I don't know for sure, because I do think Orton is a pretty solid QB and I'm glad to have him here. I know that I personally don't think he would. In fact I don't think Dallas would manage to score 10 points a game with Orton, given their other offensive issues.

i totally disagree with that.

truth:the cowboys line has played well the last three games.

truth:orton's quick decision making will be more benificial for the line than romo's feet.

truth:orton wont miss wide open receivers the way that romo has done the last three seasons.

truth:orton is just a better professional qb.

truth:john kitna lead offense scored 31.2ppg behind a worse line than the cowboys have now.romo hasn't come close to averaging 25+ since 2007.

I don't either, but Jerry shouldn't be commenting on it either way. Players must love the fact that the HC doesn't make these decisions. This was like Jerry saying that Felix would be the KO return man despite Garrett's comments.

There are certainly topics that Jerry shouldn't be commenting on.

Could you imagine the out cry if Orton goes on a winning streak with the talk of a contract extension. They are not going to let that happened unless Romo goes down with an injury. Does not matter how bad he is playing right now.

My biggest gripe is we have not benched a wr that deserves to be benched

Ignore the idiots.

He basically is saying:

"You don't fire yourself or quit, you look at yourself in the mirror and get better."

And then Orton will become Orton, which has led to him being traded/released at every other stop he's been at.

He's a great backup quarterback. We're the first team to realize it.
