No, he was not. Regardless of what he actually did, he never actually held the title of GM or co-GM or assistant GM or personnel director or anything like it.

Jimmy also claimed that he was the "personnel director" when he was here, which is another crock. Bob Ackles was the personnel director until 1992, when he was replaced by Stephen Jones. Jimmy never held that title.
Again, Jimmy built the team, but he never held any of those titles, and he's wrong about Jerry not holding them when he was here.

So the only real difference is those guys held titles and took orders from Jimmy.

Jerry was GM in name only. Jimmy built those teams. Everyone with a brain knows that. If Jerry was really the force behind those titles we would have been sparred the Quincy Carter-Chad Hutchinson years as well as all of the mediocrity years since.

Yup, technically correct, but irrelevant to how the team was run and who had the real influence under Jimmy's tenure. Jerry picked up Jimmy's toy, broke it, and hasn't fixed it since, because he doesn't have a clue how to run a team. Bill babysat for him for a few seasons and with good behavior, Jerry was able to get an even bigger playpen, now the partially repaired toy is all but busted again running off the dying power of a few stellar players brought in during the forced observation period of the past decade.

I wonder if the next time Jerry brings up himself and the 3 Superbowls if anyone in the media will have the balls to mention this article?

I hope they rip him apart all week. Can't wait to see how this goes on FOX pregame this Sunday.

For the young fans who weren't old enough (or not yet born) to remember how this played out:
Quote:
With it's coach and quarterback working well together, the Cowboys finished the regular season with a record of 13 wins and 3 losses. The Cowboys breezed through the playoffs, beating Philadelphia at home and San Francisco away. For the first time in fifteen years the Dallas Cowboys were in the Super Bowl. They crushed their opponents the Buffalo Bills 52-17. They also won the next Super Bowl over Buffalo again 30-13.
[View Full Quote]Jones desperately wanted to be one of the "boys". He took credit for many trades, personnel decisions, draft choices, and free-agent signings, when Johnson did most of the work. This annoyed Johnson to the very core and he put up with it for five years, but his assistants and friends could not tell how much longer Jimmy and Jerry would last. Johnson said in an interview that he had some interest in coaching the expansion team that was going to be in Jacksonville. He also " accidentally" said " He wondered if Jones had taken $20,000 of the $60,000 the league gave the Cowboys for a team party." on The Late Show with David Letterman.(qtd in Bayless Hell-Bent 78) Both of these remarks were said before the Cowboys won their second straight Super Bowl. Looking back at 1994 many reporters and fans believe, Jones was growing tired of Johnson's fits of rage, lack of respect, and trying to take total control of Jerry's team.
At the league meetings in March of 1994 Johnson, girlfriend Rhonda, former coordinators Dave Wannstedt and Norv Turner, their wives, Bob Ackles, and Brenda Bushell were sitting around drinking, celebrating their second straight Super Bowl, and conversing when Jerry Jones walked into the room and came over to their table. Since none of the people at the table socialized with Jones or wanted him around when they were not working for him, they basically ignored him. Jerry became quiet furious and said "you ******* people just go on with your ******* party." (qtd in Bayless Hell-Bent 79)
Jones went back to his hotel and proceeded to tell a group of reporters, two of whom worked in the Dallas media, not to go to bed cause they were going to miss the sports story of the year. Jones said "I think there are 500 who could have coached this team to the Super Bowl. I really believe that." (qtd in Bayless Hell-Bent 80) He later mentioned that even he could have coached it. Jones supposedly told some reporters in the bar he just might fire Jimmy Johnson, replace him with Barry Switzer, and that he should have done it two years ago. Within days Switzer and Jones were conversing by phone about the idea of Switzer coaching the Cowboys.

As for the current Cowboys, Johnson sees problems with the way Jones has structured the team. Johnson said that in the NFL, everyone — players, coaches, general managers, everyone — is motivated by the fear of losing their jobs. But when Jones has hired himself as general manager, there’s no fear of losing his job — and also no fear of any of Jones’s family members or other personal favorites losing their jobs.
“Really, the No. 1 motivator is fear, you know, fear of maybe letting down your teammates, of being chastised or maybe losing your job. Where’s the fear in Dallas? There’s no fear in Dallas. It’s a country club where everybody’s buddies,” Johnson said.
You go Jimmy!

The news element is Jimmy's public admission, or readmission that he built this team alone - contractually.

From the article I posted above:

Jones said "I think there are 500 who could have coached this team to the Super Bowl. I really believe that."

It's 18 years later, and what has changed? Jerry still doesn't recognize a quality coach, and he still doesn't see the point in having a competent general manager. Apparently he still thinks he can just pull someone out of the cheap seats to coach this team to a Super Bowl. Never mind that it hasn't happened since all of the players that Jimmy drafted have retired.
