The problem is "what he does" isn't good enough. Let's not act like this defense has been stellar in the past. We've been an extremely one dimensional pass rushing team. Block Ware and the Cowboys have nobody to pressure the QB.
The thought of handing him a long term extension as he plays into his 30's and either expect more or accept the same is troubling to me.

We'll settle this with a good dust up.

I'm tired of the guys who only get sacks getting all the press and praise. we have two outside backers who are all around, three down players. I just wish we could use the roster spots we save by not having extra situational guys to fill a few other holes.

Id like to see him here long term. I like what he brings. let's focus on our most critical areas of need instead of creating more

He will be 29 in Jan, so a 4-5 deal where he can be cut in the last 2 years if his productivity drops should be ideal. I doubt it happens though, some team that is desperate and thinks it is closer to SB will sign him for very lucrative contract that we cannot match. we should already have a replacement for him on the team, but we do not. We drafter 3 lb's in Wades first year but none of them panned out. Our only hope is that Wilber develops or we luckily hit on OLB in next draft

we cannot afford the cap hit of either franchizing him again or giving him a long term deal.
Either one would be too expensive.
Simple as that.
With all the work that needs to be done on the O line we cannot afford to put that much money into a player that is not worth that much money

Well isn't fair to be critical of his sack totals when we were told in the offseason how the new secondary upgrades would make the qb hold the ball a second longer and turn all those "almost sacks" from year's past into legit sacks? What happened to that theory?

And that team will be us. I guarantee it. I like Spencer but this is just contract year production, I'd rather have a pass rusher opposite Ware

I just don't agree. I think he can be resigned long term much cheaper than his $8.9 million franchise number and using the o-line as a reason to not resign him makes even less sense. We likely won't find a replacement in gree agency which means we have to use a first round pick on a replacement.

Me personally I've always said it's about the inside pressure, which we still don't have. When Ware and Spencer come around the edge, QBs almost always step up into a clean pocket. Adding a pass rushing NT/DE would take our pass rush to the next level

And how do you improve your inside pressure?
My guess? Get more nickel corners.

Our D-linemen have a combined 3.5 sacks (Hatcher has 2 and Brent has 1.5).
That number must improve

Definitely. I'm hoping Tyrone Crawford is part of that progress in the future but we'll need some personnel upgrades too.
But I can't agree with you on Spencer. You have to be very careful who you hand these big veteran free agent contracts to. A guy like Spencer just doesn't warrant it. We need to stop with this comfort level with mediocrity. The known because safer and more appealing than the unknown. There is life after Spencer. The fact that our next starting OLB could be worse is no valid reason to extend him.

I guess where we disagre is on what type of deal Spencer will get. I think if he signs a 5 year deal, we can get him closer to 7-7.5 per with the flexibility to cut him if his play drops.
