Default Report: Raiders talking to Gruden about return

Report: Raiders talking to Gruden about return
By The Sports Xchange | The SportsXchange – 12 hours ago

Former NFL coach Jon Gruden is in talks to return to the Oakland Raiders, Pro Football Weekly reported on Tuesday.

The report comes a day after the current coach, Dennis Allen, left the team to attend the funeral of his father who died Monday.

Early in November, Raiders owner Mark Davis voiced his frustration with the team, which is 3-9 after losing five in a row. In the past week, reports have surfaced about the Allen's job being in jeopardy after one season.

Gruden was probably the most liked coach of the Raiders since Tom Flores retired in 1987. Gruden coached in Oakland from 1998-2001, compiling a 38-26 record after working as the receivers coach for Andy Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles.

He left Oakland in 2002 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which he guided to a Super Bowl victory over the Raiders that season. He was traded to the Bucs by late owner Al Davis for two first-round draft picks, two second-round picks and $8 million.

Gruden was fired by the Bucs after the 2008 season after producing only two more playoff trips. He has a 95-81 career head-coaching record.

In 2009, Gruden joined ESPN as a color analyst for Monday Night Football as well as various football specials. He has been sought for a number of coaching positions since then, including the University of Tennessee job, which he publicly turned down last week.

Reggie Mckenize is not going to be Grudens Bruce Allen tho. If he wants to coach Reggie will probably be ok with it, but if he thinks he is going to be able to make personel decisions like he did in Tampa then he might as well keep his gig at ESPN.

Mixture of both really. I would say the majority want him back but they think it won't help because the Raiders organization is a mess anyways.

I would agree if the Raiders do make yet another coaching change after one season.

The Raiders are such a mess. It seems like they have both a culture and talent problem. Not to mention the Carson Palmer trade was just a bad bad idea. Whats crazy is I don't know anyone who even thought that trade was a good idea when they pulled the trigger.

When Campbell went down, they panicked and had to go get a real QB. Since they were above .500, they thought they had a chance. I thought it was a good idea to get Palmer but the price they paid was way too much.

What does Davis expect his team to be after so many bad decisions, many of which were made by him?

Seems silly to fire a guy after one year when his starting QB is a former retiree Bengals castoff. Who you traded for yourself.

Who is calling the shots? Mark Davis or Reggie McKenzie? Supposedly when Davis hired McKenzie as the GM he gave him full autonomy over all personnel decisions. If that is true, then McKenzie is the guy bailing on his coaching hire after only one year.

Maybe ESPN will let Gruden go to Oakland for only a 2nd round pick?
