Default Tuberville reportedly ditches recruits

Tommy Tuberville reportedly ditches recruits in the middle of dinner to take Cincinnati job

By Frank Schwab | Dr. Saturday – 4 hours ago

Tommy Tuberville's sudden departure from Texas Tech to Cincinnati surprised just about everyone, but it must have really surprised the Texas Tech recruits that were out to dinner with the coach when Tuberville simply left.

At least that's the story told by a recruit to TexasTech.247sports.com.
Devonte Danzey, an offensive lineman from Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College, said he and at least two other recruits were out with a large group of Red Raiders coaches including Tuberville at dinner on his official visit.

"The waitress brought our food out, and we thought [Tuberville] went to the bathroom, but he never came back to dinner," Danzey told the website. "Then next thing I know, the next day, he made an announcement that he's going to Cincinnati."

He was probably keeping an eye open on other jobs since the first week he got there. He saw Texas Tech as the easiest way for him to win some games to get his name back out there on the market again.

If he has a few good years in Cincinnati, which is possible because he'll be inheriting a good team in an easier conference, he'll probably try to make another power move in 2014 to a big-time program again.

Cincy is a stepping stone to Big 10 so maybe he is interested in coaching in the Big 10?

I think he sees the possibility of Cincy joining the ACC and knows that would be an upgrade vs the Big 12 long term.

Kidding aside, what you said is most likely true. That he has had to deal with fans that miss "the Pirate" his whole stay at Tech. I'm not sure he ever felt appreciated there. Also, maybe his family prefers a bigger city.

So your thinking that not only does he want to jump conferences but he also wants to change professions and become a Basketball Coach?

He's been bitter ever since his Auburn stint. No share of National Championship (which he has a right to be upset). But he's become increasingly surly over the last few years...

The other thing is that his son is a Freshman on the TT team...

He'll likely have to go with him. He would certainly be ridiculed for his dad's behavior if he stayed...

He was never popular because he followed the pirate.

It didn't help that he had a lot of shady links and didn't win to boot.

He didn't like Lubbock much at all and was looking for a lifeline before he was fired. If he didn't win 8 games in 2013 he woulda been out the door.

Cincy is a terrible job but at least it is one Tubs can use as a springboard which is likely his only goal. The guy had a walk on son in the Tech program and another going to school locally. He left all that because he was getting chased off.

This was his weakest recruiting class since he arrived. He was ready to bolt.

But Cincy isn't even in a conference really by the end of the week. Strange move. Stranger hire even for Cincy who is begging to get Big 12 consideration if they do expand.
