Computer gurus for Vista
I have no idea what has happened to my CD/DVD player in Vista, however, I finally got the CD/DVD to work again by updating all the drivers on my computer (what a pain in the butt doing that)!
Anyway, not I have one more slight problem that I cannot figure out.
When I used to insert any type of music CD, it would automatically open Windows Media Player and play the CD.
Now, when I insert a CD...nothing! So, I have to go to the Computer Icon and click on the CD drive and it then opens up the CD and the songs appear, then it asks what to I want to play this with...Media Player, Itunes, etc.
I have gone to the Default Settings and made the Windows Media Player as the default, but, it still does not open the Media player automatically like it used to do!
What am I missing here? Any suggestions would be helpful.
(and no, I'm not buying a Mac, can't afford the price for what I need).

Well, the autoplay box is clicked on and I chose the Windows Media player as the default.
Insert CD...nothing, go to the Computer Icon and click on the CD drive and the songs appear...again! So I click on a song, same thing...What do you want to open with?!!!!!!

Haven't your cd rom disappear in the past meant one of two things. 1. The drive was failing, or 2. you have a virus.
Generally, I haven't heard today's virus taking out cds anymore. I would think your cd rom might be failing.

Are you trying more than one CD? Are these old CDs (years old) or relatively new? The music industry has tried creating all kinds of barriers in audio CD protection to prevent people from easily copying or ripping them. One tactic for example is to put a small data track on the CD so a computer treats it like a data CD instead of an audio CD. If your CD is several years old, then this is less likely the problem.
My first reaction was the same as Sam's .. sounds like a CD player going bad.

My CD drive is working, it reads the CD, it just won't automatically start Windows Media Player. I still need to go to the Computer icon, right click in the CD drive and then it ask me what to open the CD with. That is my problem..

Try this:

It almost sounds like your associations have become corrupted somehow.

The CD drive works just fine, it just won't automatically launch Windows Media Player.

Your drive could still be failing even though it appears to work fine (at times).
Have you checked all your connections to the motherboard?

I don't want to go into the motherboard on my laptop.
It would probably get more messed up!
I'll find out why, or just live with it.
But.....I think I found my problem!
So, it's all fixed. Four days, boot after boot.
I cleaned all my puter up, defragged it first. Updated drivers, all kinds of Windows update stuff, virus checks, crap coming back at me in C code.
I hate computers, but with all your help. I got this thing fixed. Very frustrating. Now, I can rest my brain!
