Laptop Internet Problem

Hey fellas, Merry Christmas!

I have one of my old laptops in front of me that I am trying to get working again and am having a problem.

Its a HP Pavilion dv2000, running windows XP.

The wireless adapter doesn't seem to be working. When I go into network connections it says it is connected to my WIFI but when i go into properties, the ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway are all empty and it isn't transmitting any signals.

I am able to connect an ethernet cable directly from the modem to the laptop and gain access to the internet.

I have tried resetting the wireless adapter to no avail and even tried to reinstall XP via an .iso file but the image doesn't boot when I restart the computer and select the CD drive to boot first, which is strange in itself.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried unplugging your router for 30 seconds and restarting it?

No. But I'm sure it's not the router since my other laptops and phone connect just fine.

XP is not user friendly connecting to the internet. If I remember correctly you can use the wizard to connect using dynamic addressing. However, it is tricky and sometimes you have to restart your router then your computer to recognize it. It might be the other way around.

If you must you can go in and instead of dynamically setting IP addresses you can do it statically by manually putting in the IP, gateway, and subnet mask.

I'd try the Internet Connection Wizard first. Again that's if I remember XP correctly.

When you say the IP address, subnet, and gateware are all empty do you mean they are set to receive DHCP or are they just empty? Make sure in properties they are checked to receive an IP via DHCP.

Once your set for DHCP I want to see what IP it is receiving. Go to the command prompt (in XP it's in the menu under accessories or system tools, I believe). Type "ipconfig all" without the ". If you receive a 169.x.x.x number then it's not getting an IP from the router. Othewise you should be receiving IP info from the router.

Another possibilities that I've seen is that the router may not have enough IP's for all the devices attached. Make sure the IP range on the router has enough available IP's for all your devices. This probably isn't it but I've seen it happen before.

I tried entering the subnet, gateway and ip manually but it still never caught on. I'm not sure if I was doing it right when I went into my laptop that does connect and went to properties to get all the subnet, gateway & ip information?

I'll try the wizard later tonight.

I'll try this later tonight as well. when I say those are empty I mean when I go to network connections and go to the properties of the connection and click details, where it lists the ip, gateway, and subnet, there are no numbers at all, just blank spots.

when I hook up via ethernet, and the internet works, those obviously all have numbers and what not.

When I lost mine I had to update my browser,Firefox, and it never missed a beat after that but I tried all the diagnostics and had to wire it to modem to get it online until I did browser update. Good luck!!

If "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected then those boxes should be blank. If "Obtain an IP address automatically" is not selected then I would select it and see if that does the trick. The computer should then receive the needed IP information from your router without having to enter any numbers manually.

I'm sure you have done so but make sure you have your wireless on. I'm probably misunderstanding this but if the laptop works via LAN and doesn't via wireless I've been guilty of not having it on before.

just wanted to update..

unfortunately none of the suggestions worked. i ended up getting xp reinstalled and completely updated and that didn't change anything either.

I did some more research on the problem and found it that my model laptop (and a few others) have had this problem and HP had a recall exactly for this problem back in 2009. they would fix it for free and send back, but I didn't see that at all .

I saw a temp fix online such as stressing the CPU until 80*C but haven't tried that as I think it could do more harm than good.

looks like I'll just have to roll without the Wi-Fi.

That is a good suggestion. I use a USB wireless on my tower system because the on-board wireless was flaky at times.
