Archer - Jerry Jones needs to listen more in-house
Jones’ circle of trust includes former coaches and personnel people in the NFL that he turns to at different times of a season as sounding boards. It’s good to have sounding boards, but they shouldn’t be more influential than the people inside the building.
Why doesn’t Jones listen to the people who are inside the building more?
They have followed this team more closely than anybody else outside the building. They have followed the college talent more closely than anybody outside the building.
He has talented scouts. His pro department the last two years has done a great job of finding guys off the street that have helped keep the Cowboys competitive. In talking to other teams across the league there is a great respect for the Cowboys’ college scouting staff as well. The drafts the last three years have produced Dez Bryant, Sean Lee, Sean Lissemore, Tyron Smith, Bruce Carter, DeMarco Murray, Dwayne Harris, Morris Claiborne, Tyrone Crawford and James Hanna.
Jones might not believe he is doing a disservice to his staff by saying such things, but when the first person he credits for picking Murray two years ago is Barry Switzer, it’s just wrong.

We'll settle this with a good dust up.

he cant listen to people in house because he knows that
1) he has surrounded himself with mediocre 'yes-men'
2) no one in the organization has the cojones to tell the owner/GM/president what he needs to hear
this is as much an indictment of the organization as anything
a strong leader surrounds himself with strong sub-ordinates
a weak leader.....

I have no issue w/ him naming Barry Switzer as the selling point to Murray. It is well known that Switzer and Jones are tight and w/ all do respect, Switzer still has huge ties to Oklahoma and Stoops and his program. The man is out there a lot seeing these kids and his connections at Oklahoma are probably second only to Bobs. That is still to saying its probably moreso than ANYONE "in the building" @ VR.
Using Switzer and the Murray situation to make the authors point was probably not the best one to hang your hat on IMHO.
I've got a prayer on my desk. It says, "Dear Lord, I pray that my place will never be with the cold, timid souls who do not compete yet criticize, for they never know or feel success or failure."

Jerry...
...in the media is not the most ideal situation.
Sometimes it's better to keep things to yourself.

Archer is such a huge Garrett Kool-Aid drinker, I'm sure he thinks Jerry should listen only to RJ.
The obvious reason Jerry might go outside the organization is because he realizes the advice he's been getting inside his organization hasn't been very good.

Jones probably figures since he pays his scouts a lot of money, he can handle the PR surrounding a pick the way he wants to. While I agree with Archer notionally here, there are other ways to make sure your scouts get the credit they deserve in coaching circles. And pumping them up publicly probably doesn't help you retain them in the long run.
Archer's right, though, that Jerry should listen to his current staff in terms of personnel. They're doing a nice job right now. Even though we don't want to admit it having just suffered through the horror of 8-8.
When asked whether Jason Garrett is the right head coach for this team: "I don't think there is anyone else that could. I think he is an unbelievable coach. We've responded to him and he has made us better football players, better people. If you watch us I think we play with a certain relentless spirit." --Sean Lee

Jerry has consulted with other former coaches and Dallas front office folks in the past many times.
Is it a slap in the face to the organization that he currently has?
I don't think so because this is what is called "due diligence" in trying to find out as much as possible about a prospect.
If you believe that Jerry is doing this all by himself than you are a sucker for the media.
Group decisions, group effort, group drafting.
BTW Lacewell gave us info about Bruce Carter the year we selected him.
"It's little bit like the description of pornography from years back. It's hard to define it. But you know what it is at the end of it. It's hard to define it. I think you know who is more physical. Often times you see that in the fourth quarter. A lot of time the team on the other side feels it. We pride ourselves on being a physical football team. It's important to us. It's an important time of the year to lay that foundation." - Coach Garrett

So did Butch Davis. Who actually coached Carter at NC.

Unless Jerry is talking to someone working in college football, he is talking to:
a. A competitor
or
b. Someone out of work in the NFL
Yea, that's who I want to listen to.
