When the Captain has no idea what he is doing, you might as well be rudderless. Such is the case in Dallas.

2000: Campo (HC), Jack Reilly (OC), Mike Zimmer (DC)
2001: Same
2002: Campo (HC), Bruce Coslet (OC), Mike Zimmer (DC)
2003: Parcells (HC), Mo Carthon (OC), Mike Zimmer (partially forced on Parcells by Jones) (DC)
2004: Same
2005: Parcells (HC), Sean Payton (OC), Mike Zimmer (DC)
2006: Same
2007: Wade Phillips (HC), Jason Garrett (OC and head coach in waiting forced on Phillips by Jones), Brian Stewart (DC)
2008: Same
2009: Wade Phillips (HC/DC), Jason Garrett (OC)
2010: Phillips/Garrett (HC), Garrett (OC), Paul Pasqualoni (DC)
2011: Garrett (HC/OC), RR (DC)
2012: Garrett (HC/OC), RR (DC)
2013: Garrett (HC), TBA (OC forced on Garrett by Jones), Kiffin (DC forced on Garrett by Jones)

Finally tally: 5 head coaches in 16 years, 7 OC's in 16 years, 6 DC's in 16 years. 4.5 Co-ordinators forced on coaches by the GM (I'll count Zimmer as a half), and 2 HC's in waiting hired and forced on the HC.

Seems rudderless to me. In my opinion.

Ah, the things people here don't wish to read. I guess it comes down to expectations. The identity has everything to do with being mediocre. There are some good things, some bad. Some things are accounted for while other details are typically ignored.

If the plan centers around changing coordinators, a few staffers, and little more, well... I would expect more of the same. The Cows won't be scheming themselves into the playoffs. That's not much of a plan, IMO.

A better job of procuring talent, especially at the point of attack would go a long way in forging an identity.

I would agree with the OP. This organization spends a lot of time reversing field when the previous blueprint fails miserably.

The defense was more a problem because of health than it was poor play. Had the offense not been a turnover machine with a porous offensive line, and Dallas could have had any type of run game, this would have been a different season.

So Jerry, in his best GM wisdom hired a DC who will now change the scheme.

So any identity the team had, and improvements they would have made on offense is now being diluted on retooling if needed.

I have yet to understand in all the time I have been reading your posts why you feel the need to attack posters with acrimony.

Jerry Jones is flailing at making changes for change's sake, and the OP had a point.

As long as the guy who is not a football mind keeps churning the coaches box, this team is running strictly on talent alone.

And people keep wanting change. Just give Garrett time. You need consistency at the head coach position.

I don't know about 5-11, but I think the franchise has been steering a fairly steady course towward medicority for quite some time.

You also need some actual progress from one season to the next. Other coaches are coming right in and taking their teams to the playoffs or greatly improving the team. What exactly are we improving on that leads us to believe we'll make another step this coming year?

Year Record Finish (Regular / Post Season) Coach
2012 8-8-0 3rd -- NFC East -- Jason Garrett
2011 8-8-0 T2nd -- NFC East -- Jason Garrett
2010 6-10-0 T3rd -- NFC East -- Wade Phillips, Jason Garrett
2009 11-5-0 1st -- NFC East 1-1 - Lost Divisional Playoffs Wade Phillips
2008 9-7-0 3rd -- NFC East -- Wade Phillips
2007 13-3-0 1st -- NFC East 0-1 - Lost Divisional Playoffs Wade Phillips
2006 9-7-0 2nd -- NFC East 0-1 - Lost Wild Card Playoffs Bill Parcells
2005 9-7-0 3rd -- NFC East -- Bill Parcells
2004 6-10-0 T2nd -- NFC East -- Bill Parcells
2003 10-6-0 2nd -- NFC East 0-1 - Lost Wild Card Playoffs Bill Parcells
2002 5-11-0 4th -- NFC East -- Dave Campo
2001 5-11-0 5th -- NFC East -- Dave Campo
2000 5-11-0 4th -- NFC East -- Dave Campo
1999 8-8-0 2nd -- NFC East 0-1 - Lost Wild Card Playoffs Chan Gailey
1998 10-6-0 1st -- NFC East 0-1 - Lost Wild Card Playoffs Chan Gailey
1997 6-10-0 4th -- NFC East -- Barry Switzer

There is a theme here. Losing, losing in the play-offs, change coaches, same results, change coaches, same results.

One common denominator is Jerry Jones the GM, a man with no background in the NFL, but bought his way in.

It's not that it didn't work this time. Since he became the high exalted decision maker for this franchise, it has yet to work with a team that he oversaw the talent acquisition.

This is black and white.

That is about as rudderless as a team can get.

I have to agree. At this point he's just a different flavor of Wade Phillips.

You might prefer "the process" to "aw shucks guys" but at the end of the day it's just different window dressing at the press conference.

Behind the scenes Jerry is still the most important guy in the office and Garrett is just one of a number of "important voices" that Jerry talks to prior to making a "decision by consensus."

This is not Garrett's team, it's Jerry team. Garrett is just part of Jerry's team.
