The Strong Side DE tends to be bigger than Spencer (6-3, 250).

Even Dwight Freeney is 268 lbs.

Kevin Carter (6-5, 290) - 2008 Tampa Bay Bucs
Corey Wootton (6'6, 270) - 2012 Chicago Bears
Red Bryant (6-4, 323) - 2012 Seattle Seahawks

More importantly Spencer has his best season on his contract year (big red flag) and is on record as saying he was mailing it in at times last year. Dallas better have exit strategy if they sign Spencer.
If anything, extending Romo would create cap space to resign Spencer.

A couple of years ago, Tony was in a Jimmy Kimmel skit called "Handsome Mens Club." This clip is right after Jimmy said he was more handsome than Romo because Romo has big ears and that was the reason he can't get his hat on forward.

QB Tony Romo has played 4 "Win or Go Home" games since 2008 (includes 2 playoff gms) -- in 3 of them, his QBR was less than 20"

Wow I'm honestly shocked that we are going to look at resigning him. I like spencer but at what cost is the biggest issue

If they can sign him to a sensible contract do it... However the draft will have some nice players in it.

Yep your whole argument versus creating a hole and having to fill another hole. All gonna come down to money.

He is close r to 260 and putting on 5 lbs would not be that big of a deal probably. I am not an athletic trainer though so I could very well be wrong.

What's a "sensible contract" amount?

Is it possible Dallas looks to Spencer as SLB, With Lee at MLB, and Carter as WLB?
If you build it, he will run...

He can probably play the position; however, I would be concerned giving him a big contract or Franchising him at 10M to do it.

I thought Spencer was a must-retain in the Rob Ryan defense because they just didn't have anybody else that was a 3-tool player (i.e. run defense, pass-rush and coverage). The Kiffin SDE just needs to be a 2-tool player (i.e. run defense and pass-rush).

I do think that Spencer is a very good player and has been very underrated since he's been with the Cowboys.

I disagree. He has steadily improved in the pass rushing department the last several years and has shown himself to be much better than average. Perhaps Rat and Hatch can generate good pressure in the middle or maybe not but two bookends plus rushers on the line go a long way towards making our defense elite.

A replacement whoever it may be might be serviceable but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Teams always pick top rushers high and by 18 I expect it to be thin.

Teams like the Colts and Steelers follow this model and are successful and I think emulating consistent success is a good thing.

... Which is why they are in preliminary talks. What part of preliminary talks means they are guaranteed to sign him?

Without Romo, it really doesnt matter who we have on defense......3 wins max.

You really believe that?

This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.
