Default After Seau findings, what’s next for NFL?

Mary Ann Easterling wasn’t surprised that the analysis of the brain tissue of beloved Chargers linebacker Junior Seau revealed abnormalities consistent with a form of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

The neuropathologists consulting with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) discovered abnormal small clusters called neurofibrillary tangles of a protein known as tau within multiple regions of Seau’s brain, as Easterling suspected they would.

This is a very good read on the effect concussions may be having on NFL players.

Flags around the waist.

No helmet in the world can prevent a these type of injuries. It's a violent sport, deal with it or get rid of it.

Well, actually I think advancement in technology with respect to the helmets can help limit concussions. It's not an all or nothing option.

It is, nothing can stop your brain rattling around in your head.

Actually it isn't. There are ways to limit the concussive impact to the head. That's why they wear helmets to start with. They have come along way. Otherwise we would still be wearing leather helmets.

It stops your head from cracking open. Nothing can stop the brain from hitting the inside of your head.

Technology can lessen the violence of the impact of the head on the inside of the helmet.

Yes, it can. Even with that, there can still be concussions that will occur due to impact to the head. There are also going to be concussions due to plays with the whiplash effect where the head snaps around and the brain sloshes around within the skull and gets battered around. There is room for improvement, but there are always going to be some limitations. It definitely isn't all or nothing. It is going to be some improvement and always some risk.

Absolutely. And that is my point. They will find new technologies to help but as anyone who has ever played the game knows, you can't eliminate all the risks.

Next is helmet technology. I think there can be vast improvement in that area.

We'll settle this with a good dust up.

It's not just the impact to the head but also the whipping motion of the neck that forces the brain into the skull.

You can get a severe concussion without ever getting hit in the head.
