I agree that internet hoaxes definitely do happen (in fact just last week 20/20 had a report on such hoaxes) but in this case, Te'o had to have been in on it because of all the specific details he gave about meeting her, being with her, etc, etc. I just can't fathom a possible motive for this, which makes me think the guy just isn't playing with a full deck.
However, this tremendous distraction does go a long way for me in describing why Notre Dame's defense simply didn't show up in Miami against Alabama.

To say that's the "only" explanation is absurd, especially since it just doesn't make much sense. If you're trying to cover up the fact that you're gay then you say "oh, uh, yeah, I have a girlfriend in California" and you leave it at that. The last thing you would want to do is bring attention to your made-up girlfriend by "killing" her off.

But really, once he started getting media attention people were going to start to wonder about where the girl was. Oh, shes dead. Thats why she isnt here at the Heisman ceremony.

Good to know Notre Dame doesn't contact authorities when one of their own players is a victim either.

That's silly. I'm sure a lot of these guys have girlfriends, but the only one I can remember anyone mentioning is when Brent Musberger went crazy over Miss Alabama during the BCS Championship.
Seriously. Do you honestly believe that Te'o said to himself "geez, I don't want anyone to know she is made up and doesn't exist. I know..!! I'll kill her off and make our story the #1 sob story in the world of college football..!! Yeah, that lie will be much easier to maintain!"
I think he's just one of those deranged people that feeds off of getting sympathy from others. I'm not sure he broke any laws (because it's not like he was taking money from anyone like those people who pretend their children have cancer) but he definitely needs professional help.

That might be funny if it were true, but from what I've read Notre Dame - who literally is only 3 weeks removed from having found out about this - contacted the proper authorities immediately and they are investigating.

He's either a sociopath or a closet case. I dont really see this hoax story bearing any weight.
The Swarbrick press conference is hilarious. Epic fake tears.

I don't buy the hoax story either since he gave so many details about all the time they spent together. I'll buy that he is definitely not playing with a full deck. My only hope, for his sake, is that he's not so deranged to actually believe this little made up person actually existed, like that guy from A Beautiful Mind (John Nash) did.

I think he could be gay. He is a Mormon and a football player. That can't be easy.
That would be the best explanation for his actions.

Dude is probably gay. Was hiding it. Lies spun out of control. Now he's digging a hole deeper and deeper.

I think it's both: they hoaxed him, and he BS'd to the press about it for attention not realizing it was fake. After he figured it out it was too late and he just didn't say anything.
