– OK, now it’s really getting weird.

On the same night the story of Manti Te’o's girlfriend and her death last year from Leukemia was revealed as a hoax, an NFL player insisted “No, she is real.”

Um — what?

Arizona Cardinals fullback Reagan Mauia said he met Lennay Kekua in person during an outreach trip with Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers and others in June 2011.

“This was before her and Manti,” Mauia said Wednesday, according to ESPN. “I don’t think Manti was even in the picture, but she and I became good friends. We would talk off and on, just checking up on each other kind of thing. I am close to her family. When she was going through the loss of her father, I was — I offered a comforting shoulder and just someone to bounce her emotions off. That was just from meeting her in Samoa.”

Does this mean that other hoaxes with the girl who doesnt exist but has met another football player have been going on for a while?

I watched an earlier interview with him, I can't imagine how he was hoodwinked through a hoax. He claimed her family was supporting him emotionally through it. That she was the love of his life.

I felt the same way at first, but who knows? there is some FB from Arizona claiming that she was a real person and he knew her as well. this whole thing is very strange.

This story is so strange. If you don't have twitter your missing out the jokes keep on coming. My theories in order 1.) guy has something loose and was in on the hoax for attention

2) He met girl on twitter started online/phone relationship. Found out it was a hoax and kept it going because of embarrassment. Then overreacted and killed her off instead of breaking up with her because he's dumb.

3) he's not straight which is fine but has to hide it because of his religion and school he goes too. So he comes up with this fake girlfriend and somehow ends up with all of this.

Insane story. Shoutout to deadspin.
