Eatman: Cowboys Looking At Rich Bisaccia for ST

With Joe DeCamillis taking a job in Chicago, it leaves an opening for a special teams coach. Sources say the Cowboys are looking at veteran coach Rich Bisaccia, who recently took a job at Auburn. Bisaccia worked with Kiffin at Tampa Bay and has recently been the special teams coach in San Diego.

After helping rescue San Diego’s special teams from near dormancy in 2011, Rich Bisaccia was promoted to Assistant Head Coach—Special Teams soon after the ’11 season ended.

While Bisaccia helped restore credibility, it did not come without challenges. Kicker Nate Kaeding was injured on the first play of the season, but punter Mike Scifres coolly stepped in and helped lead the Chargers to a win over the Minnesota Vikings with a clutch fourth-quarter field goal. Days later, Nick Novak was signed and in 15 games set new team records for field goals of 40 and 50 yards or longer in a season. Scifres had an outstanding year, averaging a career-best 47.5 yards per punt. Long snapper Mike Windt remained steady, while Richard Goodman earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors the last week of the season after a team-record 105 yard kickoff return touchdown during a win in Oakland.

[View Full Quote]From 2002-10, Bisaccia coached in Tampa Bay. In his first season, the Buccaneers won Super Bowl XXXVII.

Bisaccia’s special teamers in Tampa Bay earned three Pro Bowl selections, 13 NFC Player of the Week awards and four NFC Player of the Month awards. The Buccaneers scored four touchdowns on kickoff returns, four on punt returns, and blocked 10 field goals, five punts and three PATs.

In 2009, the Buccaneers led the NFL with six blocked kicks. They also led the league in kickoff return average and ranked second in opponent kickoff return average.

A former defensive back at Yankton College in South Dakota, the native of Yonkers, New York began his coaching career at Wayne State (Neb.) College in 1983.

Bisaccia and wife, Jeanne, have three daughters, Michele, Elizabeth and Madeline, and a son, Richie.

...the pros pay SO much more, especially for special teams and Auburn is in a state of flux anyway. I'd guess 300-400k at Auburn, and I'd guess about 750Kish with the Cowboys for same job and NO recruiting. Total no brainer.
