Free isn't Rob Pettiti. He's played the position at a high level for entire seasons and was a coveted free agent by other front offices, which is why Dallas had to outbid Tampa Bay to keep him as a UFA. IMHO, it's mostly a confidence issue, which then causes you to lose faith in your technique.

The best thing we can do for Free is get a great guard next to him. When he has had a decent guard next to him he has played very well.

that excuse is just that - an excuse

Does not mean a thing with all the 1 on 1 battles he lost.

I don't think having Tampa chase you is automatically a sign that you are good. Free is not a good tackle, he stunk last year. He makes way too much money and that money could be used elsewhere.

Time to cut our losses.

I agree with the writer of the article. Free is not going anywhere but Dallas does need to have a back plan which can only come from the draft.

Draft: DE/DT, safety, guard/center.
Garrett to players: Make today a great day; go about the business of winning! If you can't keep up then don't step up.

Nope. This is inaccurate. He may not turn out to be a great RT, even with a great Guard next to him but the statement is true. When he has had a good Guard next to him, he has played well.

If you watch some tape he is inconsistent. I'm not smart enough to know what the problem is but he'll play reasonably well then he looks like another player out there. There is someone out there in a Doug Free suit trying to play tackle.
Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.

Some guys can play LT and then turn around an play RT as well. I think it has to do with mentality. The two positions, as I'm sure you know, are very different and not just physically. The mentality of the two are also very different. LT's obviously have to be more agile but a lot of times, LTs don't have that killer mentality that I think you need to have to be a RT. RTs are different that way. I don't believe that Free has that in him. I also think he struggles getting out of his stance at RT. It's like he has to think about what he's doing on that side. The LT spot seems much more natural for him when I watch him. Don't get me wrong, I never thought that Free was one of the upper echelon LTs in the League but I did think that he could be an above average LT for us, based on his performance early on. When we sustained injuries to our interior OL, he struggled with the inside move. The move to his right basically. I watch him now and I still see him struggle with that at times.

This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.
