I actually had this discussion with some friends a couple days ago and they all called me crazy, so I expect nothing different here

I still say we should inquire about the progress of former Panthers' #1 draft pick Jeff Otah.
Leave no stone unturned.

As best I can surmise, one sports writer posted an assumption that many people have that Free will be released, then the rest of the gossip chain (aka: facebook/twitter) repeated it as "will be released" which in turn constitutes "many sources".

Doug Free:
Keep, then cut before 2014:
2013 Cap Hit = 11.175M
2014 Cap Hit = 4.175M
Cut now and designate as "June 1 Cut":
Cap Hit Now = 8.35M
Cat Hit After June 1st = 4.175M
2014 Cap Hit = 4.175M
Basically, they save 7M against the 2013 Cap and 7M in real dollars by cutting him.

If there is, in fact, any truth to this then I think that the Cowboys have to be looking at a Vet to bring in. There is no RT in this draft that can come in day one and be the starter assuredly. No way that the Cowboys could be counting on the draft to fill that position at this point. We haven't even had the combine yet. They would have to be thinking about FA. Either that or there is no truth to this rumor.

I hope they have a better backup plan than Parnell.
Garrett to players: Make today a great day; go about the business of winning! If you can't keep up then don't step up.

Word from Dallas is that ORT Doug Free, who has committed
eight false starts,
six holds, two of which were declined
and allowed seven sacks (per STATS LLC),
is on a short leash and must play better to return. Next season, Free is owed a base salary of $7 million next season and the Cowboys would take a salary-cap hit of more than $10 million, per league sources, if he was on the roster. They are still on the hook, cap-wise, for more than $8 million guaranteed after he redid his deal in March to help the Cowboys ease some accounting woes and push money up into the guaranteed category. It appears the Cowboys would consider releasing Free, and they could turn to developmental OT Jermey Parnell, who has made huge strides since joining the team from the Saints’ practice squad. Even if Free comes back, he most certainly will have to rework his deal.

I'm sure they'll hedge their bets.
When asked whether Jason Garrett is the right head coach for this team: "I don't think there is anyone else that could. I think he is an unbelievable coach. We've responded to him and he has made us better football players, better people. If you watch us I think we play with a certain relentless spirit." --Sean Lee

The double whammy is the money and him not being worth it.
