Thirteen Years ago we lost our coach
Forgive me but please permit this old timer a bit of nostalgia...
Hard to believe that it has been thirteen years but on Feb 12th 2000 Tom Landry died.
I still miss him on the sidelines.

I was still watching Spongebob (few years out of diapers) when Coach Landry passed. What a great influence on the entire league during his lifespan.

I had the great privilege of meeting Coach Landry 1 year before his passing.
His image on the Cowboy sideline is iconic...he will always be THE Coach of the Dallas Cowboys to me.
Great thread, thank you.
Behold the greatest Coach in NFL History Thomas Wade Landry (1924 - 2000)
Thanks Juke!!!

Great coach, great man. Rest in peace, Coach.

Icon.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

The best ever. Coach and man. Those of us who got to watch the Cowboys with him as coach, were very lucky.

"Tom Landry is the only coach the Cowboys have ever had." Man, I miss hearing the commentators say that.

With Coach Landry on the sidelines I never felt we didn't have a chance. I may be one of the few who believes given a little more time he could of turned things back around for this franchise. Something we will never know. Here's to you Coach!

And to think the fans wanted to run him out of town the first few years of his career...... and what happens? Yup.... 10 year extension. I'm glad I got to watch his teams for many years!

The Sunday after Coach Landry died I did a sermon about him/his life and how he influenced those under him. I related it to discipleship. I spoke of the respect people had for him as well. What an example he was for all of us.
Numerous players spoke of how he impacted their lives apart from football.
Some of his assistant coaches went on to have great success. Dan Reeves led two different teams to the Super Bowl. Mike Ditka and Raymond Berry met in the Super Bowl when the Bears beat the Pats. Gene Stallings and John Mackovic had success at the college level.
It was said that when Mike Ditka was an assistant with the Cowboys he was always yelling. He yelled at players. He yelled at other coaches. He yelled at everybody, all the time, except for Tom Landry. Ditka never yelled at Coach Landry.
I will always admire Coach Landry and what his life stood for. I would hope that my life has had a positive impact on people as well, even if its not the number of people Coach impacted. Its something we can all strive to do.
