He's not the only one saying it though. You have to remember that proven veteran franchise QBs almost NEVER hit the open market. On the very rare occasion they do, they very much do command absolute top dollar to teams in need of one. It's not matter of deserving more than one QB or the other.

Resign him and draft a qb in the new few years and groom him.

Orton isn't a bad QB if you can protect him a little bit. No doubt the O-line must get better, but that goes for Romo or Orton. Its all a value thing. Is the value Romo brings to the team better than Orton if you have to break the bank.

Tucker is very rarely wrong.
When was the last time that a HEALTHY Franchize QB with several years of production left in him hit the open market?
Look at the money that Manning got when there were lots of doubt he would ever be any good again.
Romo is healthy and while of course not at Manning's level he is way above any other one that I can think of that hit the open market.

No worries.
They will not have to break the bank to extend Romo. They'll pay him well, but not 105 mil for 5 years like the OP suggests he could get on the open market. I think 15mil/yr average with some good guaranteed dollars will do it.
I also think they back end may allow them an out.
It's expensive but would actually help us on the cap for at least 2 years and maybe more.
He's be a huge hit to the cap this year without an extension, and if we franchised him next year he would get top 5 QB dollars by rule.

Lets not forget about teams that has a good qb that he would take their spot. Teams like Houston, Tampa Bay, Philly, and Tennessee come to mind.

Agreed they won't break the bank and I doubt Romo would try to make them. I think 5 year ~80ish is realistic though.

If Dallas was to get a offer of two firsts for Romo i think they would do it. But i dont think a team would do that. QBs like Romo and better dont hit the market. Brees was average before Payton, and Peyton manning had just had serious surgery.

i like that but id like it better if it was more realistically a 3 yr 42-45 mil deal. With Roster bonuses in yr 4, and 5. Easier to release him after yr 3 and cap hit is minimal

Are you serious?
That'd be atrocious. Bradford is not good and comes with a contract that is likely just as high as what Romo is going to sign for.

It will likely be 5 so they can push the money way back. Can't do that with 3 for what he'll be making per year.

If romo were an unrestricted fa with no threat of a franchise tag? If youre a team with cap space and no qb of course youll make him the highest paid qb in the nfl. But we dont live in that world...

There more too.
The easier list would be the teams that would not start him over what they have. That list would include teams with SB winning QBs (Brady, Rodgers, Roeth, Eli, etc) or teams with very good young QBs with upside (Kap, RG3, etc), or teams who have fairly young guys who they think can get it done (Ryan, Stafford).

I said a 5 yr deal, with roster bonuses in yr 4, and 5. Which basically turns it into a 3 yr deal with 2 1 yr options.
