They go inside high schools and recruit a bunch of 16-17 year old kids. They tell them they will have their college payed for, get a fat signing bonus, and be set for the rest of their life. 17 years old, have never voted, have never lived on their own. What do they know? The marines used to be outside my cafeteria everyday in high school. Just sitting their at their table full of brochures and a pull up bar where all the football players showed up to class late because they would stand around and try to do more pull ups than each other.

Interesting.
Would any be in favor of mandatory service? If you don't like recruiting methods, then this is what you are left with.

do you mean true mandatory conscription or the bogus type they had in Vietnam era where if you had connections could get a ton of deferments or be placed in champagne divisions that will never see combat?

Were you drafted in the Vietnam War?
If the answer is no, then I can't really accept your description of what you term to be Bogus.

You know exactly what I mean (and I believe are the same age as me so you weren't drafted either).
Either everyone goes in or not. Being able to get around serving by deferments or connections is not real mandatory service.
Anyway, unless it is war, mandatory service is not appropriate since you force people to be a soldier who really don't want to be one. While the tactics described above are not appropriate, at least one could say the person who signed up volunteered even if they were lied to in some respects.
If someone doesn't want to be a soldier and it isn't a time of war, why make him or her.

I know what you are implying. I also know that as a Citizen of Canada, you really don't have a say in the question I asked. I was not old enough for Vietnam but then again, I am not trying to make any statements about a draft I was not a part of. Any point you might be trying to make ends right there.
The question I am asking are for those who do not like the process of recruitment. If you don't like that process, then the alternative is mandatory service.
Get right with one or the other but don't complain about one if you can't find it in you to support the other.

I don't. I am simply stating a fact and it is not related to politics. It is a reality of the situation.
