What this means is that we are screwed. Our cap is going to be in horrible shape in a couple of seasons. Welcome back to 2000 if this is true.

Ratliff IMO should be cut. And i think if Dallas stays virtually pat at DT then he'll stay. If they go out and sign FA and draft DT. Id say he's gone. Freeing up 1 mil.

Id like to see them free up about 10-15 mil. Then go and sign a couple Lower guys along the DL. Okoye, Ty Warren types.

Maybe a WR like Devery Henderson, or Louis Murphy.
Just about the smartest move they could make.

They cut him right now and only have about 4.5M in cap charges. Cut him next season and it's 3M

If they restructure this year, next year they could have about 7M in cap charges if they cut him.

Also, not restructuring keeps his cap numbers where they are which isn't too bad......7-8M for the next 3 years. Even if he misses some time, that's still not a bad number for a guy of his ability.

Cutting Ratliff saves 1 mill?

No it does not. We owe 6 mill on his SB. His 2013 Salary is 5 mill. My guess is that you are thinking the difference between the remaining 6 mill of his bonus and the 7 mill we'd be charged against the cap is 1 mill.

What you are missing -- and I know this has been brought up about a million times -- is that Ratliff's 2013 salary is guaranteed. He gets that 5 mill regardless so there are no savings here.

Not true. 2013 salary is guaranteed.

Is it? I wasn't aware.

They don't have that on spotrac.

Well, either way not restructuring keeps his future cap hits low and gives the team to cut him with less cap charges.

Thanks though.

Part of his 18 mill guaranteed -- only 10 mill in SB.

People say it is a bad deal -- but really we just added two years of commitment. After this year we save 1.5 mill to cut him - or we could keep him for 5.5 mill a year (if he performs well in 2013, that's a good deal for a quality DT). After that he's got silly salaries of 7, 7.5, and 10.5 mill. I doubt that when he signed the deal, he expected to see those years ... yet people scream about the size of the deal and length, totally ignoring that 3 years and 25 mill of it is total fantasy.

Looks like he'll make 11.5M via weekly checks.

Signing a new deal likely gives him 20M guaranteed right up front and another couple million in base salary.
I really don't know much about this, but I'm sure Romo will get more than 20 mil guaranteed.

We'll see. I was just throwing it out there. I'm sure he'll likely get more as well but not all of it is going to be signing bonus. They'll probably guarantee the first 2 years of his contract on top of the SB.

So now Romo is worth 20-25 mil a year. That's like 20% of the salary cap. We not talking Brady or Manning here folks.

Some of that guaranteed money will be spread out over the life of the new contract. I don't see a $20M per year deal coming. Romo's cap hit for 2013 should be well under $10M. The problem comes, as ABQCowboy pointed out, later in the contract. The cap hits in 2016 and 2017 (if he signs a 5 year deal), will be pretty high if we decide to part ways with him.
