Redskins put contract talks on hold as they work to recoup salary cap space

The Redskins have put contract negotiations with some of their players on hold, telling agents and players they remain hopeful they can recoup some of the salary cap space that was cut by the NFL last year, according to several people familiar with the situation.

Redskins officials have told those agents and players that they cannot negotiate in earnest until the salary cap matter is resolved. The players include some eligible for free agency in March and others who face the possibility of release unless their contracts are reworked, those people said.

They spoke on the condition of anonymity because the team does not want such issues discussed publicly.

The team has told parties involved that it hopes to reach a resolution by late this week.

Twitterdom rumors are that the Redskins are threatening the "nuclear option" and will sue, thusly holding up FA.

This is just rumors on twitter and nobody substantial (such as Shefter) has reported it. However it is very interesting if true

Update: 3:37: Redskins officials have told people in the league that they are considering going to court to seek an injunction that would hold up the start of free agency or threatening that move in a bid to bolster their negotiating leverage with the league. Those conversations were confirmed by two people with knowledge of them.

Both said that the Redskins have compelling arguments they could make in an attempt to convince a judge that they would suffer irreparable harm if they are not granted an injunction. But others familiar with the case have said they don’t believe the Redskins have legal arguments that weren’t already considered, and rejected, by an arbitrator.

Dont forget, if they win, they should get an additional 1.2 million to use above the cap. Every team in the league was given that bc of our penalties. So not only should they be awarded the cap room they should get the additional per diem the other 30 teams had

We all wish something could be done, but it just won't happen.

Although the redskins got screwed, I don't think the Redskins have much of a case.

We all know the NFL conducts itself more like a cartel than it does a business, so normal anti trust laws don't really apply here. In exchange for being an NFL franchise, they've essentially agreed to abide by anything the NFL decides to enforce. And with the vague idea of 'preserving competitive balance', pretty much any kind of action the competition committee takes can be justified as long as it's for "the good of the NFL".


The NFLPA, on the other hand could have a case, but DeMaurice Smith signed off on the cap sanctions so there goes that.

Could the Redskins help the NFLPA build a case against the rest of the NFL? Probably... but why would they want to do that? They'd destroy themselves in the process as well.

Just move on... it's done with.

I'll get to the issue with proving collusion in a minute...

First off the Redskins, nor the Cowboys were colluded against. The collusion argument is that the Owners withheld money from the NFLPA by setting an imaginary cap in an uncapped year.

So what does Snyder stand to gain by going against other Owners and helping the NFLPA prove collusion? That would be a big win for the NFLPA and a big loss for the Owners.

All that aside, how is that even collusion if the Owners and the NFLPA did not have an agreement in place at the time of said collusion?
