Default Texas A&M Pro Day: Moore struggles with injury, Joeckel strong in drills

COLLEGE STATION - Texas A&M defensive end Damontre Moore put together an uneven pro day performance Friday, hampered by a hamstring injury that limited his ability to rebound from a subpar showing at the Scouting Combine last month.

Moore and the other prospects on-hand worked out for representatives from all 32 NFL teams, led by a contingent of five from the New York Jets, including head coach Rex Ryan.
Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen, a former Texas A&M Aggie himself, was also in attendance.

Moore began the morning with 19 reps on the 225-pound bench press, which was an improvement from only 12 in Indianapolis. However he decided not to run the 40-yard dash due to the hamstring, resting with his 4.94-second result from the combine. Moore did look better in the 3-cone (7.05) and short shuttle (4.31) drills on Friday.

Moore said he tweaked his hamstring at the combine and aggravated the injury while performing his 3-cone drill. Despite wincing in obvious pain, he also took part in the positional drills, working out with both the defensive linemen and linebackers.

"I fought through it and put my best foot forward," Moore said. "I got my bench press up and ran decent times."

Moore thought about not participating in the drills due to the hamstring injury, but wanted to perform for scouts.

"For him, his evaluation will be off video and how he played," said Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin. "He wouldn't be a projected first rounder if he didn't play like it."

Offensive tackle Luke Joeckel, the top-rated prospect by NFLDraftScout.com and a possible target for the Kansas City Chiefs with the No. 1 overall pick, and wide receiver Ryan Swope decided to rest on their combine results, only participating in the positional drills Friday.

Oakland Raiders offensive line coach Tony Sparano put Joeckel through a battery of blocking tests, while Swope caught passes from former Aggie quarterback Jerrod Johnson. Both performed well and kept their positive draft momentum pointing north.

They are pretty good short burst and agility numbers actually and the 19 reps isnt too bad.

Can't believe some people have him out of the 1st round all together. I think he was a little overrated to begin with being in the top 5, but I think a smart team like the Steelers would love to have him at 17.

I hope the Spencer franchising doesnt mean we wont look at DEs in the first rd,we cant ignore a good prospect if one drops to 18.

If a good DE falls it would be a smart move. Ware is getting older and injuries are are a concern. Spencer's future in Dallas is uncertain. There is not much depth at the position. It is going to be a position of need in a very short time.

He was hurt at the combine. People are overreacting.
Either way, he has lost millions off of that 1st contract already.

I don't care about his geek numbers. That's over analyzing. If this has pushed him down, I'll have no problem whatsoever with the Cowboys taking him at 18. He can be the heir apparent to Ware.

We'll settle this with a good dust up.

I don't know if he can be the heir apparent to Ware. That is some big shoes to fill and I don't think Moore can fill them. That doesn't mean he can't be a good pick and a strong asset for a team, but I don't feel he will attain Ware's high level of play.

I hear you.

But heir apparent mean to replace (or next in line of succession) when the time comes, it does not mean he has to a be a HOFer.

I actually agree with this.

I wouldn't be the least bit disappointed if we went DL in round one.

I didn't mean be as good career wise as Ware, but be the weak side pass rusher for our defense in the future.

Beat me to it. I would never put Ware expectations on anybody. Just be a quality starter at Ware's position. We need to find that guy because he certainly isn't on this roster. It'd be nice to lighten Ware's load as he enters the last years of his career.

Before the Dorks, Moore was a consensus top 10 pick, if not top 5. Now he's a borderline 1st rounder. That's over analyzing. That's how the Ravens stole Terrell Suggs.

Sitting w/ someone who was at TAMU pro day, told me Nwachukwu really impressed. Advised he's undervalued by groupthinkers. #NFLDraft

I also agree that Moore is a top 5 talent and steal at 18 and would take him.

However, If Warmack or Cooper are still there at 18 do you take Moore over them?

If you do and he's falling to the bottom of the 1st, which I doubt will happen, would you trade up from your 2nd to move up and get him?

I would hardly call drafting a guy #10 overall stealing.

Been very interested in Uzoma Nwachukwu for awhile now. I think he could be a late round steal at WR2 or 3. Also curious to learn more about the two safeties, Steven Campbell and Steven Terrell.
