Opinions on Desean Jackson

I'm admittedly not a big college football follower. The only time I really pay attention are the months leading up to the draft.

I know alot of us are calling for the team to draft a WR in the first rd. this year and I think with the impending retirement of Glenn (seems like a foregone conclusion at this point) and the potential loss of Crayton to FA (price tag may be a little high for his proudction/ability) we're definitely gonna need to find some playmakers to put out there to compliment TO and Witten.

Jerry hasn't really had a history of drafting WR's in the first rd recently and he seemed to indicate that he wants players who would be able to come in and contribute or at least compete for a starting job w/ our first rd. picks. He also did mention the need a of "wow" player on offense and the only player who fits that profile (ability to start day one and "wow" factor") seems to be McFadden. You could however make an argument that Jackson fits this mold given his ability as a returner, but will he have that huge adjustment period as a WR as many thought Ginn would need (who btw has looked better as the season progressed)? If Jerry and co. think this then I'd probably say he's not in our plans.

Jackson was one of the more hyped players going into this year, but his production seems down considerably? Does anybody know why? Has his performance slipped, injuries, better gameplanning, poor qb play?? Seems a little odd a guy would fall off in his junior year after such impressive campaigns in his freshman and sophomore seasons?

Also what do you guys think of his ability to transition to an NFL wide-out? I have some doubts myself due to the whole size issue. Anomolies like Steve Smith, Terry Glenn and Santana Moss can happen, but there tend to be reasonable explanations for their individual success where other guys of similar stature have failed (Smith = unbelievably strong for his size and insanely quick, Glenn = 1 of best route runners in NFL and great hands, Moss = 1 fluke season )

I think he's more of a receiver than people give him credit. He's not "just a return man" like Ted Ginn. I'd certainly be happy taking him with a late first rounder.

I like him but I would rather see him stay 1 more year in college. I think unless you expect to go in the top 10 I think most of these kids could use the extra year in college to develop and mature. Just my opinion.

I agree with this. I watched a few games this year because I wanted to see what the hype was about. What I took from that is he a a very good reciever and route runner. He also changes teams gameplans because they have to account for him in coverage because of his speed. The reason why I think his numbers were down because teams rolled coverage to his side quite often. Kinda like what the Lions did with TO Sunday.

Like almost any WR, Jackson is going to have to through a learning curve, so his immediate impact on the team will be less obvious than a RB, IMO. McFadden will be the type of player who will add the "wow" factor to whichever team gets him, but the price for us to go up far enough to get him, I say no to such a steep cost for McFadden.

Oh I'd LOVE to have him. I think he is just not having a good season, plain and simple. He is too talented though to not be a great WR in the pros.

However, I dont think he'll be available when we're drafting...if he even turns pro.

I feel about the same . He's a better receiver than Ginn coming out of college , but not as good of a return man . How that relates to the NFL I don't know . I won't be surprised at all if T. Glenn comes back and plays well through the playoffs . If he does , don't be shocked if he returns in 2008 , Crayton is resigned , and Dallas stays the course of developing Hurd , Austin , and Stanbeck . With the success this season , I don't see Dallas reaching this year .

Heck if you want speed look at the kid from UH I think he will show himself as the fastest players at the combines.

think of a more hyped steve smith (Car) coming out of college. i dont know if he will ever play with the strength that Steve Smith does for his size though. Def a better choice than Ginn from what ive read on him and Scouts opinions on sites. his 40 time is 4.3 apparently. Ive read he has game speed though so only time will tell.

all and all it would be a nice pick esp if we resign crayton. he could be brought along slowly

No problem. I will say 172 is pretty light weight. Jackson will have to add some beef in my opinion to survive this league. Glenn is not considered a big WR but he is about 20 pounds heavier than Jackson is.

I doubt he weighs in at 172 at the Combine.
