Default Some Insight on our new offensive weapon - Q. Morgan.....

All-Pro Scouting Services, L.L.C.

Recently I was able to conduct an interview with Kansas State's standout WR prospect, Quincy Morgan. Morgan, who led the Wildcats in every receiving category in his two seasons at KSU, is now poised to make the move to the NFL. At 6'0", 209, and running an impressive sub 4.4/40, Morgan possesses a great blend of size, speed, strength, and the ability to run after the catch(RAC). He's a two time All-Big 12 selection and was named to the All-American team in 2000. He's an impressive looking WR whose got the potential to come in and make plays immediately. Below is some info on Quincy, followed by our interview.

Name: Quincy Morgan

School: Kansas State

Position: WR

Height" 6'0"

Weight: 209

40 Time: 4.38

Draft Status: Mid-Late 1st round projection

My View: Quincy is a very nice, laid back, intelligent young man. He's got top 15 talent and will be a steal if he goes in the late first round. He's got the size/sped combo that NFL offensive coordinators love. Quincy has the ability to turn a short 5 yard pass into a 75 yard TD. He's one of the best receivers in running after the catch. He'll be able to step into any offensive system and make plays.

INTERVIEW:

Q: What kind of person will an NFL team be getting when they draft you?

Q.M.: On the field they get a competitor, a hard worker, and a proven winner. Off the field, they'll get a well rounded, nice man who will never get in trouble.

Q: What have you heard about your draft status?

Q.M.: It varies week to week. I've heard anywhere from the mid first to the early second round. Only the Lord knows where I'll go. He has a plan.

Q: What are your plans for after your football career is over?

Q.M.: I want to start my own business so I can be my own boss. Something like what you have. I want to be able to work from home, spend time with the family and work when I want to work.

Q: What are your three playing strengths?

Q.M.: I think my ability to run after the catch is my greatest assett, followed by my ability to stretch the field and my physicality.

Q: Do you have any weaknesses in your game that you're looking to improve on?

Q.M.: I don't think I have one weakness that stands out, but I do feel I can improve in all areas of my game.

Q: Are you physically ready for the NFL?

Q.M.: I believe I am. I have the size, strength, and speed to come in and play right away. I've been preparing my body for this moment for years. I know I'm ready to step in and make a difference.

Q: Are you mentally ready as well?

Q.M.: Yes. I went to a school that played in a hard conference(Big 12) and we had to be mentally prepared ever week. I think I'll be able to adjust to the different things the NFL will present to me. I'm a good learner and very coachable as well.

Q: With the draft just 3 weeks away, what are you doing to stay focused?

Q.M.: I surround myself with my family and friends. I work out everyday and come home and play my Playstation and talk with my best friend.

Q: With David Terrell and Koren Robinson getting all the hype as the two best receivers in the draft, how do you feel your game stacks up with their's?

Q.M.: I think my numbers speak for themselves. Both those guys are excellent players, but I don't see what they have on me. I feel we're all big, physical, and fast receivers, but I think I have the full package. I wish those guys well.

Q: What was the combine like for you?

Q.M.: It was a great experience. I don't think I'll ever forget it. It was great meeting all the different receivers from around the country and meeting all the coaches and GM's was very nice. I learned alot.

Q: Can you be an impact player in your rookie season?

Q.M.: Yes I can. I think I'm one of those guys who can make something happen whenever the ball is in my hands. I'm a playmaker and that's what I'll do at the next level.

Q: What are your goals for your rookie year and beyond?

Q.M.: I want to be known as a steady, consistent receiver who made plays. I'm going after that Super Bowl ring though. That's what I want.

Q: What teams have expressed the most interest in you thus far?

Q.M.: The Saints, Jets, Patriots, Seahawks, Chiefs, and Dolphins, but there's no telling what will happen between now and April 21st.

Q: What team did you grow up watching and wanting to play for?

Q.M.: The Cowboys. That's my home team. Everyone loves the Cowboys in Texas.

Q: Would you like to play for them now?

Q.M.: Sure. It wouldn't hurt to play for a team close to home. I honestly don't care where I go. I am blessed to have this opportunity to live out my dream.

M.G.: Thanks for your time Q! Good Luck in the future!!!

Q.M.: I appreciate it. It was good talking to you Matt.

Notes: Played at Blinn College in Kansas in 1996 and ’97 and was considered one of the best junior college players in the country. Also ran track at Blinn. Transferred to Kansas State in ’98 and redshirted because he was not ready to grasp the system. Redshirt year seemed to pay off, as he caught 42 passes for 1,007 yards and nine touchdowns in ’99 and averaged 48.7 yards on his nine TD catches. Caught a career-best 64-1,166-14 and returned seven kickoffs for 160 yards in 2000. Was a first-team All-Big 12 pick at wide receiver in ’99 and 2000.
Positives: Very good size and speed. Has the ability to get deep and separate. Good runner after the catch. A play maker and a big-play guy. Wants the ball in the clutch. Can dominate games at times, as he showed in the 2000 game against Nebraska.

Negatives: Hot-and-cold player who has too many lapses in concentration. Drops too many balls and lacks some discipline. Gets careless with the ball and will fumble. Did not work out at the Combine even though he was not injured.

Summary: Could be an impact player or a disappointment. Has the tools to excel but must improve his approach to the game and focus to realize his potential, or else he may be a guy who teases with his talent but can’t be relied upon every week.

2001 NFL Draft:
QUINCY MORGAN, Wide Receiver
School: Kansas State University Wildcats. Height: 6:00.6. Weight: 214. Hometown: Garland, Texas

ANALYSIS

Positives…Money receiver who thrives to get the ball in pressure situations...Naturally strong athlete with great field acceleration...Has a sudden burst out of his cuts and is known for making the off-balance grabs near the sidelines...Has the quickness to consistently beat the defender on deep routes...Makes most of his yardage after the catch, easily turning the defensive back on his routes while kicking into second gear to run away from his man...Very aggressive route runner, trying to get into the end zone every time he touches the ball...Has quick plant-&-cut ability and loves when the defenders give him even the tiniest of cushions...Uses his hands and arms well to escape the press and knock defenders off stride near the line...Shows smooth and fluid body adjustments while tracking the ball in flight...Very effective at uncovering in time for the quarter-back to deliver the ball to him in the short area...Big target who shows no hesitation going over the middle...Makes over-the-shoulder grabs look routine.

Negatives…Has been a problem for the coaching staff, as he needs to be pushed and prodded in order to play up to his vast potential...Not that respected by his teammates, leading the life of a loner...No “rocket scientist” in the class room and his lack of intelligence sometimes carries over onto the field...Not a natural pass catcher, as he will make stabs at the ball, rather than extending to snatch...Always looking for that “home run” ball, which sometimes causes concentration lapses, resulting in drops of easily catch-able balls...Shows little willingness to block, preferring to just “pester” his man and making no effort to sustain his blocks.

CAREER NOTES

Another in a long line of junior college discoveries (Blinn College) during the Bill Snyder era... Two-year starter who has a Keyshawn Johnson-like attitude when it comes to playing the game (just give me the ball)...Led or tied for the team lead in receptions in 21 of 24 regular seasons games he’s played in for the Wildcats...One of only seven players in school history to catch over 100 passes and one of only four to gain over 2000 yards receiving in a career...Only player in KSU annals to gain over 1000 yards receiving in a season twice in a career (Only other player to gain over 1000 yards in a season was Darnell McDonald with 1092 yards in 1998)...In just two seasons, he’s managed to grab 106 passes for 2173 yards and 23 touchdowns...His 106 catches rank sixth on the school’s career-record list...Only Michael Smith (2457, 1988-91) and Kevin Lockett (3032, 1993-96) gained more yards receiving in a career at Kansas State...His average of 20.5 yards per catch set a new school career-record...His eight 100-yard performances are one shy of Smith’s KSU all-time record of nine...His 23 touchdowns are topped only by Lockett’s 26 in school history.

Anyone know how he's performed as a pro as a blocker?

I mean, that is at least as important as special teams play.
