Default Win 2000 tech support please!

I've got a donated PC that has win 2000, and Im trying to discover why it freezes so easy. It has 128 megs of memory. Granted thats not much, but when I boot up and start one program the PC freezes for no reason.

Pretty sure there are no viruses.

It's not a bad PC, it doesnt have a bunch of junk on it, but it seems like it should run a bit smoother.

I have always thought win 2000 was an odd version. I have seen this happen with win 2000 before.

I'm stumped... please help.

Make sure you have the latest service pack. Which is service pack 4. See this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260910

Try Crap Cleaner as well.

What anti-virus are you using?

Download msconfig here. You just need to download the file, and preferably extract it to c:\winnt\system32. Then start -> run the file, startup tab and disable all. Go to services, hide all microsoft, disable what's left. See if problem continues. If it doesn't, you can figure out what's causing it by reenabling what you turned off in msconfig one by one, or ideally.. reinstalling Windows.

Something pretty close to this happened to my laptop just a few weeks ago, except im running on Vista.

In my case, the computer would freeze up every time when i started it in regular mode but didnt freeze when i had it in safe mode.

So i just tried restoring the laptop back to its factory settings and it seems to have worked as it has froze only once since then.

I agree with Kilyin though, if what he told you doesnt work, try restoring the factory settings (if possible) and if that doesnt work, reinstall windows, or upgrade to a different version of windows.

Better off sticking with 2000 or using linux with 128 megs of RAM. Personally I would probably junk it. You can get a decent computer pretty cheap nowadays.

Just a question but what are you doing with a computer that has 128 megs of RAM anyways?

Hell, try slapping Windows 98 on that baby if you only have 128 MB or RAM.

"Donated" is operative word in my original post.

Actually I got the PC free when I agreed to take a cat from the SPCA.

Unfortunately, neither the cat or the PC came with a user manual.

At the expense of post padding, I just came up with a name for my new kitten.

Windows.

Windows, what a cool name for a kitten.
