Default Another boring draft opinion

Thinking about the current roster, I don't see where the Cowboys have any need for more draft picks. I say about 5 picks ought to be right.

1 WR
2 CB's
1 RB
1Safety (providing they resign Hamlin)

I would like to see Jerruh take all the second day picks and trade them to move up to a first day pick. Possibly even take one of our first and trade for 2 later first day pick, one being a high second round. One first, two seconds and two thirds would be just about right.

I agree about the number of picks. With our current roster, not many rookies are going to make the team. 6th and 7th round picks aren't going to be worth that much to us this year IMO. We need to pick for quality this year rather than quantity. We need to bring in 3-4 top notch players that can contribute right away. We need a speedy cover corner, a speedy RB, and a WR that can stretch the field. Anything else will be gravy. What we don't need is defensive linemen, linebackers, tight ends, etc. The only other position we really need to address is guard. Of course, I'm assuming we resign Hamlin and possibly Flo.

I honestly wouldn't be suprised to see us go QB late in the draft. Maybe have a guy who can be molded into a backup like Jason Garrett was for us and Sorgi is for Peyton.

You're absolutely right. I forgot that we do need to address the QB area, by bring in a backup younger than Johnson.

I disagree. Don't undervalue those late round picks. This isn't 1996-2003.

We found some quality players in the late rounds, and as an added plus, they're cheap.

This is true, but what do we need? A bunch of guys to fill the training camp roster, or three or four solid contributors? I am pretty sure that overall, third round picks are more likely to contribute than 4-7. Trading #28 for a high second and high third would save money and still get us quality players. We don't need more Stanbacks and Balls (well, maybe we do) on this team. We have plenty of guys to fill the roster.

Yes, but there's two problems with this line of thinking as of right now. First, you never know what you're going to get with later round picks. It's a crap shoot (as is most of the draft). I realize Tom Brady and Terrell Davis were 6th round picks, but who knew they would turn out to be as good as they did. Secondly, we will have very few roster spots on next year's team. The team went 13-3 this year and is primed for a Super Bowl run. 6th and 7th round picks are going to have a very, very hard time making the team, and we're still a very young team. It's not like we're going to need to rebuild any time soon. Why not get four players that will contribute immediately in the few spots we do need improvement?

For what it's worth, I think this team has done better with 7th round picks than they have with 2nd and 3rd rounders lately.

And I would add that I think a solid Guard would definitely have a place on this team.

RG can stand to be upgraded and Procter and/or Berger could be upgraded over as well.

You're right, but is there going to be anyone in the 6th or 7th round that will provide an upgrade? I don't know, but hopefully the staff does. You can't just draft a guard late because you want to upgrade. There has to be someone available that has the talent to provide an upgrade. In addition, you can normally sign undrafted FAs that are just as good as some 6th round picks and most 7th rounders. Not always, but usually. Remember Tony Romo, Nate Newton, Drew Pearson, and many others. Undrafted.

IMHO, this is the position by order we need to pick.

WR, RB, CB

Maybe. It depends on how the players fall. I certainly think those are the 3 positions we need to draft with our first 3 picks. The order will be determined by who is still on the board.

Was Tom Brady such an obvious upgrade that New England just had to take him in the 6th round?

No.

You draft guys in the 6th and 7th rounds based on potential. One pans out and it was a great pick and you are a genius.

This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

Without knowing who's still on the board, my order would be CB, WR, RB. However, if for instance, Felix Jones is still available when we take our 28th pick in the first round, I say get him.

Yes, but look at the position N.E. was in when they drafted Brady. They weren't a Super Bowl team then. We are. We don't want to reach for potential at this time. We need players we are pretty sure will contribute NOW. The last thing we need to do is reach for players based on their potential 3-4 years down the road. We're just a piece or two away from winning a championship and we have to take advantage of it.

I was thinking a C/G types, an ILB, a quarterback, and DT (in the later rounds).
