I'll repeat my manta of CB at 22, pray for a vet WR at 28 (if not that , I like Hardy), then jump up in the 2nd and get Rice.

The biggest thing for me, is that unless one of the big three fall to us, I don't want to spend a 1st round draft pick on one of the other guys. Now if we trade back into early round 2, then I wouldn't mind looking at a guy, starting with Rice.
I would be pretty happy with Johnson starting in round 2, as an overall offensive weapon. KR, reciever, and change of pace back. I think his speed and his recieving ability out of the backfield would cause a lot of problems for defensive coordinators. But if we do take him, I would still want a more conventional RB later in the draft. Maybe a Choice, Forte, or Boyd starting in round 4.

I like your thinking.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

I understand people's resistance to pickin up Felix Jones. I was against it too but if we don't trade that #28 pick for a vet WR, then I wouldn't mind picking him up. The argument against him is that he'll just be a change of pace back and special teamer, not able to take over a full load of carries....
BUT think about this for a second, Jones will be the best back to compliment Barber and adds incredible value as a returner. I think that he could get to a Pro Bowl as a returner, not as a rookie tho. He definitely has breakaway speed, has some shakes, and from what I've seen he may not be an excellent inside runner, but he's willing and he hits the hole a lot harder than Julius used to.
OK OK the main point is this... even tho he might not be able to carry the load if Barber goes down, as long as Barber is healthy he's a perfect piece to the puzzle. AND remember we need 2 backs, so why not take the best fit to establish an even scarier offensive attack in Jones, then come back later in the draft and pick a guy like BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Chauncey Washington, or Thomas Brown. A guy more suited to taking on a bulk of the carries in the normal offense as a true back up RB, and not the extra starter that Jones would be.

Makes sense.
People are also forgetting the message being sent to Barber. If we draft a true COMPLIMENT back, then it looks like we have 100% faith in Barber to be the guy and he may be more willing to sign long-term.
If we draft one of the big 3 that could be a FEATURED back, I think this sends the message to Barber that the team is not 100% sure if he can be the featured back and that we are picking up some "insurance".
Just something to think about.
