I read a post yesterday, I think it was at DailyKos but I can't remember for sure. I paraphrase here but it is close.

"This is the most important election in history. If it takes something like this to expose the liar Palin, then it is worth the breach. This is just too important. Whatever it takes to bring her down is acceptable".

I'm sure this same poster had railed Bush again and again on invasion of privacy...

Bush is violating privacy, illegal wire taps boo hoo. 9/11 just made it visible Clinton signed the Excelon Project into active service during his presidency, what is excelon? All that is a super computer that has access to everything from e-mail to voicemail. It can read IMs, public email servers, any email sent through the internet, phone conversations, all it does is flags key phrases which I am sure are updated everyday. I am sure 90% of its traffic is flushed but anything that hits its search criteria gets flagged and forwarded to some analyst at Ft. Meade Maryland for further dissection, if it warrants action it is then forwarded to proper authorities. The gov't has been spying and eavesdropping for a long time and the person that brought it into the 21st century was good ole Slick Willy.

Well, I don't really listen to the positions of people who treat politics like it's sport (our team vs their team). Sport is to war what pornography is to sex. My position: both are wrong, I just found the flip in reasoning humorous.

The program is real, but it's not that powerful and not passively sucking everything domestic (there's actually oversight - FISA, but I concede that FISA uses a secret court and the restrictions have weakened. And was ignored.). It's also from the Cold War. I'll try to not get too technical, but I can't think in any other terms (I used to work as a network technician). For it to suck down everything, every ISP would have to allow it to be installed at every switch / hop along the entire network in the US. That still doesn't include people buying / building private networks or their own WAN (e.g. ad-hoc wireless network). I don't know if you kept up with the guy who blew the whistle on AT&T, but there would have been no need to bring in new equipment if the CIA or NSA already had the networks hooked up. Where it's more likely to do its work is at the "border" switches sucking up global communications.
