The team played well last year. Yes, it had several holes on both sides of the ball that needed to be addressed. A QB, a RDE, a RCB, a possession reciever, a running back, the O-line and d-line depth. I had no problems getting rid of Ekuban, Edwards or Hambrick because it was clear they were the weak links in the team. Galloway needed to go because of his salary and he would be replaced with Keyshawn. I didn't Quincy needed to go unless they made a clear upgrade.
QB
Not an upgrade. I am a Quincy fan, so maybe I am biased, but I don't see Vinny as an upgrade. It appears that Bill thought that he would be an upgrade adn is wrong. This will need to be upgraded for the future and Henson looked like he had the skills in pre-season. I am hoping for the best.
RB
Not an upgrade. George sucks and Anderson in his new role this year is not much better. Sucks that Jones is injured, but I am not sure he would see much playing time because Bill can't seem to trust many people.
RDE
Not an upgrade. Wiley is terrible. Poor decision. Doesn't make me long for Ek, but still a bad choice.
RCB
Not an upgrade. This position is snake bit. I feel the same problems would still be occuring with Edwards in place and the even worse pass rush. It just sucks that no one can stay healthy enough, so a thorough evaluation can occur.
Possession reciever.
Upgrade. Keyshawn gives a lot to this team that Galloway didn't. Also, the continuing emergence of Witten also falls into this category.
O-line
Slight upgrade. The guys they brought in haven't contributed, but the line play is better. Larry Allen and Andre Gurode are playing better than last season. Al Johnson has come back from injury and done well. Tucker has played better than Ryan Young did last year. Still plenty of room for improvement, but they look better than last year. Too bad the running backs are too sucky to get to the holes the line opens.
D-line depth
Injuries to the secondary have caused them to only carry one back up DT. Ogbogu and Coleman have done nothing. Last year they would come in and make a few plays. This year they have done nothing. Neither knows the meaning of outside containment.
All and all, the same holes that were there last year are still there this year. In fact, the new pieces are worse. Add the Woodson injury and it is easy to see why the defense is playing worse.
