Default Two funny opinions on Leftwich- Tnew mentioned

Funny how two opinions on the same guy in the same game are completely opposite

Peter King MMQB
12. Jacksonville (6-5). It would be hard to overstate how impressed I was with Byron Leftwich against the Vikes. What presence, especially in the shotgun. Spread 19 completions among three tight ends, two backs and four wideouts. I don't remember which seatmate in the press box -- Jarrett Bell of USA Today or Ed Werder of ESPN -- said this to me at one point yesterday, but what a point it was: "The Cowboys drafted Terence Newman over this guy."

LEFTWICH A "TEASE"
In the wake of Sunday's close-but-no-ceegar performance by the Jaguars against the Vikings, a league source reminded us that the book on Jacksonville quarterback Byron Leftwich is that he's a "tease."

Leftwich looked good in spurts on Sunday. But with the game on the line, he couldn't move his big rear end fast enough to avoid getting hit from behind by rookie defensive end Kenechi Udeze, causing Leftwich to cough up the ball. D-tackle Kevin Williams scooped it up and ran (at least we think he was running) it to the end zone.

"He'll never be a playoff quarterback," said the source.

And although many media types like to compare Leftwich to Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper, there's a huge difference in these two huge quarterbacks. Culpepper is an oversized athlete -- nimble, agile, and quick -- and he can avoid trouble and make things happen (as he did on a key third-and-long early in the second half).

Leftwich, on the other hand, is Fat Albert with a live arm.

There were concerns that his new knee brace would affect his mobility.

"What mobility?" was our immediate reaction.

The only way, as we see it, that Leftwich ever will succeed is if the Jags surround him with a wall of blockers who will allow him to stand in the pocket and pitch at tires like a kid at a carnival. If/when the protection breaks down, Leftwich needs to be told to slide out of the pocket and throw the ball away. Period.

Until that happens, the Jags won't be scoring 30 points a game on a consistent basis. Sure, there will be stretches in every game when they look like the '99 Rams. But, in the end, Leftwich's inability to run and/or throw accurately on the run will keep the team from ever becoming an offensive force in the NFL.
I had an apartment and I had a neighbor, and whenever he would knock on my wall I knew he wanted me to turn my music down and that made me angry 'cause I like loud music... so when he knocked on the wall, I'd mess with his head. I'd say, "Go around! I cannot open the wall! I dunno if you have a doorknob on your side but over here there's nothin'. It's just flat."

Mitch Hedberg RIP

I would still rather have Newman.

Leftwich has such a huge windup that it is scary. It is just too slow. By the time he gets the ball out of his hand the defender should have a good jump on the ball. I am not that impressed with him overall, this was the Vikings defense after all, and they are not very good!
