ESPN Ticker regarding Taylor Mays

I don't know if this has been confirmed or not, but i saw an announcement on the ESPN ticker this morning that Coach Carroll said that Taylor Mays (S), Josh Pinkard (CB), and CJ Gable (RB) are going to come back to school next season.

obviously the chances we could've landed Mays was near impossible anyway, but i know there were some here who coveted him.

Great news for me if true. He'll be 1 of only 3 returning starters on USC's defense (offense returns 10 if Marc Sanchez stays) and maybe we have a shot at getting him in the 2010 draft.

well i hope he makes some freaking plays this season cause he sure didn't last season minus a few big hits.

i agree, i am a big USC fan, and i wanted so bad to grab one of those defensive players this year (Maualuga, Cushing, Mays). so maybe we'll have a shot at him, who knows?

what do you think about Fili Moala? i've been going back and forth in my head as to what kind of pro he could be.

Scouts are saying Fili will play DE in a 3-4. I know before the season some mocks had him as the first overall pick. Now I see him going anywhere from low 1st to the 4th round.


A story about Fili. When he came to USC I thought that his name was familiar but i figured that since I pay so much attention to all things football (high school, college, Dallas Cowboys) that I must have just seen it somewhere. I found out this year that he is the son of an ex co-worker of mine who he is named after. When I first started this job (think the name of the dreaded Redskins stadium) there was this scary looking guy who used to load up our trucks. Big, intimidating dude who never spoke. Someone mentioned to me that he used to be Ken Norton's (Sr) sparring partner. Me being the huge Ken Norton JR fan, I immediately made conversation with him. He was a pretty cool guy, lots of good stories.

I was speaking with another co-worker this year who said he just came from a big family barbecue and he mentioned that some USC players were there. When I asked why USC players were there, he reminded me of who we used to work with 15 years ago. I also thought it was cool that Fili SR used to spar with Ken Norton SR and that his son ended up playing under Ken Norton JR.
