Default Report: U.S. Secretly Training Pakistani Commandos

I guess it is not a secret anymore. Thank you New York Times. Way to put more troops in harms way and blow another classified mission. Isn't this the seventh or eighth time they have done this? They really seem to hate America and especially American troops.

Report: U.S. Secretly Training Pakistani Commandos

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,498284,00.html

WASHINGTON — U.S. military advisers, mostly Army Special Forces soldiers, are training Pakistani troops in their fight against Al Qaeda and the Taliban, The New York Times reported Sunday.

The secret U.S. task force provides the Pakistanis with intelligence and advises them on combat tactics, but does not participate in combat itself, the Times reported, citing anonymous U.S. military officials.

Pakistani army officers said last year that the Pentagon had sent 32 Americans to train senior personnel of the paramilitary Frontier Corps in the northwestern part of the country, adjacent to Afghanistan.

On its Web site Sunday, the Times reported that the effort was larger and more ambitious than previously acknowledged, involving more than 70 U.S. advisers, including combat medics, communications experts and other specialists.

A commando unit within the Frontier Corps has used information from the Central Intelligence Agency and other sources to kill or capture as many as 60 militants in recent months, the newspaper said.

Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, the chief of Pakistan's army, is visiting Washington this week as the White House and the Pentagon review U.S. strategy in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Now if Bush were still president, the Left would be outraged. Outraged at Bush for training Pakistanis not at the NYT for disclosing secrets.

They were not outraged at US troops training Iraqi troops. Why would they be outraged at US troops training pakistani troops?

If anything the right wing would have, or will, make a big whine over it like they did Obamas comments during the primaries about possibly going into Pakistan to get AQ members...even though they later said the same thing.

If you got beef...it is with the NYT for letting the info out. That is if it was not one of those situations where they were told to let it out and make it look like a leak.

Like the article said, Pakistani military officials revealed this last year. All the NYT did was say that it's a larger program now. How is that detrimental to the safety of our troops?

The earlier poster is correct. If this had come to light a few months earlier, Bush would have been crucified over it. Bush is out of office so I have no real axe to grind other then to tell the truth as I see it.

Because it's a new Administration, this will very little play. It's not right but it is what it is.

I don't follow. Are you saying that the practice of training these troops started under Former President Bush and so, because of this the current administrations hands are clean?

In truth, the practice of training Pakistani troops and many more in the area started way before GW but that's here nor there.

At some point, you gotta stop blaming the worlds woes on Bush and start taking stock of the current administration. If it's too soon for that, OK. I've a feeling that 6 or 8 months down the road, it's going to be a lot worse anyway so it really doesn't matter much when reality sets in.
