Default Do You Know Anyone Who is Smart, but Stupid?

I have a neighbor who fits this description to a T. Her name is Arin and she is actually very highly educated. Stanford and MIT as a matter of fact. Knows Art and History as well as anyone you will ever talk to who is not a Professor. Book smarts she's got.

Oh my gosh is she sadly lacking in common sense.

About 2 weeks ago she asked me to change her faucets for her. In the Kitchen she asked me to please keep the "Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier" a friend of hers had installed.

This is a Reverse Osmosis System.

This is what her "friend" charged her $150.00 to install.

In case you didn't know, that is a water filter all right, but it is not a "Reverse Osmosis System" and it costs less than $20.00. Typically these are installed on refrigerator supply lines for icemakers and water.

On top of this these are good for about a year and it had been on her sink for 6 years.

I kind of hated to tell her the truth, but I kind of relished it as well.

Well, I installed the new faucets and they look great. I even gave her all new quarter turn angle stops to replace the old gate stops and flexible supply lines to replace the solid compression supply lines.

I ran into her this morning and in her typical Pollyanna all is great in the world fashion she had to again thank me for the new faucets. She also let me know that the new faucets are doing their job so well that she doesn't think she will need to spend the $250.00 or so on a real Reverse Osmosis System or to buy a Brita Pitcher.

I kind of hate to tell her that a faucet isn't a filter and she is getting plain old Tucson tap water.

The two smartest people I've ever met in my life have zero common sense when it comes to treating people nicely. Its almost as if they don't have that gene. I'm not saying they are mean on purpose, they just don't have anything wired in thier brain that tells them how to treat people.

I've defeated this conundrum by remaining consistently stupid.

Those quarter turn stops are worth every penny. I put new ones on every new faucet I put in. Just nice knowing you won't be putting too much torque on one and breaking it when you want to shut the water off.

Yes, I am a believer that acquired knowledge and understanding is different than common sense.

My friend is a college graduate and works in the medical field.

This person left a key for their son under the mat of the front door so he could get in when he arrived if no one was home.

Here's the scary part. This person affixed a note to the front door that said "Son, the key is under the mat."

Oh my gosh, I kid you not.

Well, the phrase "book smart" implies that you're not "life smart," and that fits your friend to a tee.

Like the old saying goes, "Common sense isn't that common".

I have a friend that is very smart when it comes to numbers (he works at a HQ of a bank).

Once he came over to my house with a problem with his push mower. Long story short, he ran out of fuel while mowing his yard, but he accidently put fuel in the oil. Kind of an easy mistake due to the oil cap sort of looks like the fuel cap.

Anyway, asked him if he had tried to start it after his mistake to which he replied no. I said good, all we have to do is drain the oil/fuel mix and it should be fine. As I tilted the mower over to get to the drain plug, he admitted that he had no idea that the plug was under there. After draining that mix, I filled the crankcase with some oil, drained that, and refilled it. Told him that should do it and if he had any other issue, let me know. As I was walking back to my house, he was feverishly trying to start the mower, but to no avail. He said, "Hey, it's not working." I turned and said it would if you put fuel in the fuel tank.
That's why they play the game
