Gordon Brown is frustrated by 'Psycho' in No 10

Alas, when the PM settled down to begin watching them the other night, he found there was a problem.

The films only worked in DVD players made in North America and the words "wrong region" came up on his screen. Although he mournfully had to put the popcorn away, he is unlikely to jeopardise the special relationship – or "special partnership", as we are now supposed to call it – by registering a complaint.

A Downing Street spokesman said he was "confident" that any gift Obama gave Brown would have been "well thought through," but referred me to the White House for assistance on the "technical aspects".

A White House spokesman s******ed when I put the story to him and he was still looking into the matter when my deadline came last night.

By the way, when Obama's unlikely gift was disclosed, a reader emailed me to ask if Clueless was among the films. Funnily enough, it was not.

Brown, on the other hand, presented a rather more thoughtful gift to the American President in the form of a penholder carved from the timbers of an anti-slavery ship. The sister ship, in fact, of the one that was broken up and turned into the desk in the Oval Office.

I do believe you can get firmware updates on some players.

I know you could in the US at one time as I had trouble with one player playing a DVD that someone sent me from overseas.

Don't know if it works in reverse or if that even works on newer ones.

Maybe they should have sent a DVD player with the DVDs.

Shabby and embarrassing.

I'm sure we're quite a laughing stock over in the UK right now.

I agree with Brainpaint, if they had given the guy a DVD player it might have been a better gift. But then, they also use different power standards over there so I doubt the DVD player would even plug into a wall socket in the UK.

Just a mess through and through...I can't believe Obama himself or any of his advisors were clued in enough to know about the DVD Regions thing. I'm shocked they settled on DVDs in the first place. It's cheap and shabby. Just a sad, sad affair.

Firmware updates do not change the "region mode" of any device.

I can see it now. Brown and the wife and kids have their popcorn and sodas getting ready to watch the movie and he gets the message it can't be viewed and he has to make the announcement...

"Sorry everyone, Barack screwed it up for everyone!"

We should get used to THAT phrase over here.

No it does not in fact the only way for him to watch it would be to install an open source player on a PC because most players that are not open source that you buy are generaly based of what country/region you live in as well.

VLC is one that does not care for an fyi

The PM doesn't have a multi-region DVD player?

That is unbelieveable.

No, you dont understand, thats okay i see that a lot with you. He works over there, has a country to run, Queen to keep in check and usually a Royal mess or two to deal with, he has no time for DVD, let alone one from America.

In the United States, for the vast majority of DVD users, there is no reason to change your DVD regional code. But in the rest of the world, with so much product coming in from the United States, region-free DVD players and DVD players set to Region 1 are very common.

It isn't difficult to change the DVD player's region settings. You simply enter a code using your remote control.

The DVD rental stores I've been to here have both Region 1 (North America) & Region 2 (E.U.) DVDs available for rent.
