it really does. my local paper gave it 3.5/4 stars, but looking at metacritic, things seem off.

I'm hesitant, because I hate it when criminals are glamorized. It's a quirk I have and it causes me to dislike a lot of crime movies, especially mafia movies. I loved the Untouchables because Ness and his guys were the stars ... the heroes, and Capone was shown as the fat, cowardly thug that he was.

We do glamorize mobsters and always have. I think its not a good thing but then that is hollywood. Look at how the thugs and punks of rap music are treated= most of them should be in jail.

all I can say is, "meh"
the romance between Dillinger and Bobbie that they tried to push on the audience, was as dry as whiskey, and it burned just as bad
the main squeeze could have been a great actress, or at least eye-candy, she was neither, and the "strong woman" angle while getting the crap kicked out of her was laughable, she contributed nothing to the film, but she was in over half of it
now with that out of the way, the movie dragged on like a couple of geriatrics duking it out, although the gun-fights were pretty awesome, my favorite character was Baby Face Nelson, what a
edit: go search Baby Face Nelson on wiki, dude is a ****ing hard ***

for all the shooting, the action was pretty clean, I think there were only 2 scenes where it gets "gory", and it's just gunshot wounds

For a bunch of gangsters with seemingly infinite amounts of ammo for their tommy guns, they couldn't hit ****. I started wincing when the action started. Oh, look another 3 minutes of guys looking the other way while they just spray bullets everywhere.

lol
the funniest part of the movie occurred during the shooting at the lodge, when the old guy turns into Keanu Reeves, jumping and twisting in the air to avoid bullets
I like character-driven movies as much as the next guy, but none of these characters brought out any kind of emotion from me, I didn't give a **** when Dillinger gets blown away, although the music tells me I should

I'm with Theo and Bob on this one, I left the theater disappointed. The movie actually started off pretty good and Depp, as most times, played and engaging lead. It's funny that Bob brought up a Matrix comparison because there were times when Bale reminded me of Mr. Smith. I think he's one of the more overrated actors right now and he just came across as robotic and emotionless, even in the one scene with Billie (who I thought was good).
Everything just kind of fell apart after the first 1/3 of the movie and started going down hill. It wasn't a bad movie, but it could have been a lot better. Michael Mann is pretty hit and miss and I have to think that the film would have been better in the hands of another director, maybe even Bale's buddy Chris Nolan.
Pros:
- Good performance by Depp
- First 1/3 was good, maybe even the first 1/2
- Jailbreak scenes and Dillinger's bravado were really entertaining
- The movie had a really good 1930's feel
Cons:
- Repetitive action
- Dull performance by Bale
- Just wasn't as good as it could have been
Overall - 7/10
