Windows 7
So I'm trying out Windows 7 after skipping Vista. I put it on my little cheapo laptop and so far it's running great. As fast if not faster than XP. I wanted to try it out before I put it on my main workstation. Doesn't seem all that much different than Vista but every review I've read says its more stable and faster and also less bloated. I like what I see so far. The new taskbar gives the Mac OS toolbar a run for its money. I guess this is the biggest change from what I can tell, visually anyway.
So far: THUMBS UP!
Anyone have any craziness with Windows 7 yet?
Record: 2-3 as of 10/15/2012 | Prediction: 7-9 | Final: 8-8 with a Romo choke

It's awesome!! If you have an .edu email, it's only $30. I got 7 pro on my lenovo x61 tablet, and it blowsssssssssssssssssssssss every single version of tablet software (xp and vista) out the water. The "screen writing" is phenomenal. Handwriting recognition, editing, drawing, etc. is all an upgrade.

My wife bought it for my B-day, but I haven't installed it yet. I plan too, but I haven't brought myself to format yet. I've heard good things about it though. I had the beta, but never got around to installing it.
For those without an edu address, you can get an OEM copy of the Ultimate Edition at Newegg for around $179, vs the retail price of around $300. Just search for "Windows 7 ultimate OEM" in Newegg's search window.
What version did you get? I got the 64bit. I've avoided 64bit on the desktop due to software issues, but with all CPUs supporting 64bit now and Windows 7 pushing 64bit, the rest of the desktop software world should be catching up quickly.

If you are in college and in the right department(CIS for me) and you college/university is part of the MSDNAA you may be able to get the pro version for free while you are still in school(about 2 years for me depending on cuts to course offerings, about the life of my laptop).

I have Windows 7 64bit Ultimate edition.
Finally installed it last night. It looks nice, takes some getting used too. There is the "locate controls" issue where you have to find where everything is at.
The default file permissions was kind of annoying. I mean, my user has the rights to change the permission, but the permissions are set where I can't write to it. Doesn't make much sense.
Sure, it's to prevent unwanted things from writing to the disk, but if it has the rights to change the permissions in the first place. Whats the point?
My svn client couldn't check anything out because of that.
The install didn't even give me the choice to format even though I said a fresh install. So now I have all kinds of garbage polluting my c: drive. (thanks MS)
The telnet command exists, but you have to enable it. Enable a comand? Odd.
I have always been a huge fan of the "quick launch" menu in WinXP, the pin application is a great step forward in that aspect.
I love that I can choose to hide, only show alert messages, or just straight show the icons in the system tray.
The system moves pretty well (responsive) and seem to use less memory than XP did. (at least it appears that way)
The install made me think something was wrong. When I booted the CD, it brought up a blue screen that had no messages on it with a mouse pointer and just sat there for like 10 minutes without saying anything. My current DVD doesn't have a light on it to tell me it was reading, though you could clearly hear it spinning. Although, anyone who has used Microsoft stuff know that it will spin the CD drive for no reason for long periods of time. Not sure why it does that.
I installed Microsoft's Visual C++ Express and it told me to reboot. When I it came back up, I couldn't find it anywhere and had to install it again. I haven't the slightest on what actually occurred.
I installed the 64bit version and so far I haven't had any issues with applications. I also haven't installed many, but flash worked which has been a known issue in 64bit OSes.
So far thats all I have from the two hours I spent installing and messing with it last night.

Just realized if you hold the windows+tab key, you can cycle through the pages in a 3d view vs the normal thumbnail way. That's pretty neat.
Windows 7 definitely the best OS yet. I barely had to even install hardware drivers for the first time too. I think my printer was about it.

It's better than Vista but I haven't played around with it enough to say it's better than XP yet.

Linux has done that since Compiz (3D window effects) was added to it a couple of years ago though I believe it's alt+tab.
