I read the Gutman book when Jerry first hired Parcells, and frankly I didn't think it was all that well written. There certainly wasn't too much real inside information... Almost all of it was observation by the author or anecdotes from Parcells' buddies, like Will McDonough.
A few things I remember are:
-- Learning at Texas Tech that he had to buddy up to the players and get to know them personally. Before, like at Vanderbilt, he'd taken over terrible programs (this as a DC) and turned them around by acting like a dictator. Tech was the first time he'd taken over a team that already had a good defense, and the players rebelled against his dictatorial style. Plus, the West Texas boys didn't care for his Jersey ways. He realized then that he had to balance the bullying with some personal attention to each player.
-- Parcells did always like the 3-4, and he did it in a different way... Normally a defense trys to turn everything to the middle where there is help, right? But Parcells liked to turn everything inside-out and run ballcarriers to the sideline.
-- I do remember some time early with the Giants where the author made a point of Parcells' desire to trade old veterans a year too early rather than a year too late, and thus get some value for a player who didn't have much time left. The salary cap has probably hampered that effort these days.
-- One of the best was very short and simple. After after the Giants had won the Super Bowl, on the plane out of town, Parcells turned to Will McDonough and, out of nowhere, said, "Remember, Power Football is what wins". That's why I think that despite the pass-happy offense he ran in New England, in his heart of hearts he'd still prefer to line up with bigger, stronger players than the opposition and punch them in the mouth.
