Chris Johnson wins Offensive Player of the Year

Chris Johnson didn't get a MVP vote, but he will take home some hardware this offseason.

Johnson was named the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year Wednesday. Johnson earned 38 1/2 votes, while Drew Brees finished a distant second with nine votes. Peyton Manning got 1 1/2 votes, and Philip Rivers earned one.

(So Manning was far more valuable than Brees, but not a better offensive player?)

"I kind of realize what I did and I feel like I had a dream season," Johnson told the Associated Press. "I didn't even get one vote at all [for MVP]. Like the season I had, it seemed like, 'What more do they want me to do?' That just felt like rookie of the year; it's a quarterback thing I guess."

Well, now Johnson has something. Even if we're not entirely sure what it signifies.

It seems to be for best offensive player that was stuck on a bad team. Or the guy with the best stats other than the MVP. Or basically a way to give more players a taste of postseason honors.

Whatever the reason, it's hard to argue that "Every Coach's Dream" doesn't deserve it.

Very well deserved. I figured he'd win this award. I thought he had a serious play for the MVP but I knew he wouldn't have a shot to win it cause of Manning and Favre and the fact that the Titans just weren't a very good team this year.

I really don't understand the whole award voting thing. How can one guy, Peyton Manning (An offensive player), be voted MVP of the league and yet, he is not the Offensive Player of the Year?

Whatever, but it's just seems weird.

MVP is for the whole league (offense and defense) instead of just for the offense.

I understand that. But you would think that if the MVP was an offensive player, would also be the offensive player of the year.

I'm surprised at the disparity, but I am not surprised that Johnson got the Offensive player of the year. He was the biggest offensive weapon in the league this year hands down.

One of the biggest reasons why Manning has had so many MVPs is his responsibility for lining up at the line of scrimmage, reading the defense and then calling the play in the playbook that he feels will be the most effective against that formation. No huddles. Outside of suggestions from the offensive coordinator on what plays might work on given snaps, he has total control of what play is executed out of the playbook on each snap.

That is an unbelievable amount of responsibility, but it really takes in to consideration more than just offensive production and probably why he got MVP, but not offensive player.

Just my two cents.

Easy.

say a running back rushes for 2500 yards gets 500 yard receiving and 26 total touchdowns but his team goes 5-11

he won't and shouldn't win MVP but he should win offensive player of the year...it is an award based on STATS.

You can be the best at your position for a season (CJ) but still not be the most valuable player to your team (Manning).

Also, I think it's very hard to win MVP unless your team has a great season and at minium goes to the playoffs.

Agree.

By "small school", I assume you mean a non-BCS, but still D-1 conference school like Boise, Utah, Houston, TCU, S. Miss, BYU, etc. I normally don't call them small schools but that's just me.
