Default Hambrick a raider

Nick Eatman

Former Cowboys running back Troy Hambrick didn't go unemployed for too long.

Just four days after getting released in Dallas, Hambrick already signed a one-year deal with the Oakland Raiders for just $535,000.

Hambrick, who received a $25,000 signing bonus, will join a Raiders backfield that consists of veterans Tyrone Wheatley, Amos Zeroue and J.R. Redmond, and second-year pro Justin Fargas.

While Hambrick certainly wants to run the ball, the Raiders are intrigued by his special teams play. He will reunite with current Raiders special teams coach Joe Avezzano, who held the same position with the Cowboys for 13 years (1990-2002).

During Avezzano's last year in Dallas, Hambrick was one of his better special teams players, finished second on the team with 17 special teams tackles.

But Hambrick when assumed the starting running back duties last season, the Cowboys took him off all special teams.

Kinda figured he would end up there. I hope he does well but I doubt he becomes a starter absent an injury to another player.

I didn't realize Avezzano was with Oakland - was he there last year?

Nah, I believe Joe Avezzano was brought in by Norv Turner.

As for Hambone, he won't have that turf monster tripping him up here, but the A's infield dirt might pose another big problem. I've got money on that pitching mound to be the leading tackler this season for the Raider opposition.

Might be a very dependable backup/role player for Norv in that offense...

good for Hambone

No surprise here.

I don't think T-Ham will be in the NFL much longer unless he realizes what he really is (not a starter). He better play his butt off on ST.

No he pretty much stayed focused on the Desperados last year.

Raiders Add Hambrick, Terrell
May 17, 2004

The Oakland Raiders have signed two young NFL veteran free agents - running back Troy Hambrick and defensive back David Terrell.

Hambrick was the leading rusher for the Dallas Cowboys last season and ranked eighth in the NFC in rushing with 972 yards on 275 carries in 2003. He had three 100-yard rushing games last season and tied for the team lead in touchdowns with five.

The 6-1, 235-pound Hambrick has started 27 out of 51 regular season games and totaled 1,896 yards rushing with eight touchdowns and 42 receptions for 260 yards in four pro seasons, all with the Cowboys.

Hambrick first entered the NFL in 2000 after earning a roster spot on the Cowboys as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Savannah State. In 2001, he saw action at both running back and fullback and finished third among NFL running backs with a 5.1 yards per carry average.

The 27-year old Hambrick, whose brother, Darren also played in the NFL, has shown his prowess on special teams, placing second in the Cowboys in special teams tackles with 17 in 2002.

It's official. I followed him to the airport to make sure he was gone. Good riddance. Too bad the only thing he ever gave us was the most humiliating moment in Cowboys history when he wussed out of bounds instead of lowering the shoulder into Dawkins chest last year. He could have been a 2,000 yd. back and I still would want him out because of that.

It should be the other way around. Emmitt should be the Raider and Hambrick the Cardinal.

Well at least Hambrick got a little off season conditioning last week when He was seen running away from the press at Valley Ranch.

I doubt he'll ever touch the ball but who knows. Probably just a special teamer.

Good for him nonetheless.
