I'd be more interested in his 20 and agility drill times.

I'll say this his ability to read a play is why he is always around the ball. Not a big need for recovery speed when you are where you need to be.

James is listed at 4.7 and Brooking faster than James--4.51. My guess is that 4.51 number is old. I have no idea if there is even such a thing as an official time later in ones career b/c they quit timing 40s after the draft.

5.02 is unbelievably slow.
I think our punter runs that fast and of course our kicker can run that fast backwards.
I agree that his forty is not a total deal-breaker tough..

Not a big fan of him, even on the field. Reminds me too much of Bradie James, and I'm not exactly a Bradie James fan

take him at 59. **** 40 times. He produced very well in college. Teams are dumb if they pass him on him just based on that. The next Ray Lewis.

I think I rather have
Jamar Chaney, Mississippi State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 242.
Projected 40 Time: 4.64.
Combine 40 Time: 4.51.
Benchx225: 26. Vertical: 39.
Projected Round (2010): 2-3.
3/2/10: Jamar Chaney quietly pieced together a great Combine, notching a 4.51 40 (fastest for any linebacker), a 39-inch vertical and 26 reps of 225.
1/8/10: Capable of playing most linebacker spots, Jamar Chaney recorded 90 tackles, 4.5 TFL and two sacks as a senior.
Danny Batten/LB/South Dakota State: 6-3 #250 projected 40 4.69

Scouts have been raving about Batten. The college defensive end has been spending most of his time at middle linebacker and looks like he belongs. He made plays in coverage, has gone sideline-to-sideline against the run and just like college, plays with a non-stop motor. When he took a few reps at defensive end in one-on-one drills he beat blockers. As one scout told us, Batten is just a good football player

ir we even look at LBacker at all

Ray Lewis clocked in at 4.53 coming into the league....Ray could and still can (to some degree) run down plays on the perimeter. His speed was night and day vs Spikes...not even remotely close.
Still, I agree 40 times are overrated for ILB, just not totally.

Me too.
I'd be interested in knowing what those were . . . .
I think the 40 time is overrated, esp for an ILB.

I just find that ironically funny for as much heat as James takes on this board for being slow and he ran a 4.71 and suddenly no one cares about 40 times for a ILB.

Im a true believer in "game speed"
Bradie might have better straight line speed, but Spikes looks quicker on the field.
I don't care if my ILB is slow in the 40..If he needs to be chasing down players for 20-30 yards, then the defense sucked to begin with.

I'm not comparing them in terms of speed, there overall skill set. Spikes looks much faster on film and he just reminds me of Lewis.
