Simonds' size could help his draft stock

STAFF REPORT

NFL draft hopeful Pat Simonds of Sidney had his pro day workout March 9 at Fordham University.

Simonds, a senior at Colgate University, ran a 4.53 in the 40-yard dash. He also bench pressed 225 pounds 24 times, had a 36-inch vertical jump, a 10.2-inch broad jump, ran the shuttle in 4.21 and the three-cone drill in 6.7 seconds.

Some websites are projecting Simonds as a sixth- or seventh-round draft pick, while others are predicting he'll be an undrafted free agent.

Anthony Blake of blog.blitznation.com wrote this about Simonds on Tuesday:

"Since the seventh-round discovery of Marques Colston by the New Orleans Saints back in 2006, every team around league is always looking for the big-bodied target in the late rounds that could develop into a superstar. Many clubs are banking on Pat Simonds and his 6-foot-6 225-pound frame out of Colgate to be that player this year. In a similar fashion to boxing out for a rebound in basketball, tight ends across the league have been using their frames to pull down catches for years now.

"It is only recently that wideouts have joined the party and Simonds really uses his size well to make catches on jump balls as an extremely effective red zone target. His 28 touchdowns certainly show just what kind of a threat he can be with 14 of those coming in 2009. Scoring inside of an opponent's 20-yard line has become a focal point for teams in recent years and Simonds certainly offers a ton of value when it comes to that area of the field."

Simonds finished a four-year stay at Colgate with 170 receptions for 2,797 yards.

As a senior, he caught 66 passes for 1,012 yards.

He helped Sidney to a Class C state championship in 2005, catching 52 passes for 1,038 yards and 18 touchdowns.

The NFL draft is April 22-24.
