Default Russell Maryland

The Cowboys have had the top pick in the NFL draft 3 times. 1974 we selected Ed (Too Tall) Jones. In 1989 we selected Troy Aikman. In 1991 we selected Russell Maryland.

I think Ed (Too Tall) Jones lived up to his number one ranking.

Of coarse Troy Aikman lived up to his billing.

But do you think Russell Maryland was worth the number 1 pick overall?

I don't.

Agreed.

He was a good player, but not worthy of #1 overall. That was a pretty poor draft overall. The top talent was really sparse.

We traded up to the #1 spot thinking we could get Rocket Ismail. Heck, I don't think Rocket would have been worth the #1 pick.

Did he live up to the NUMBER ONE position? I don't think so. I don't think that you necessarily draft people at #1 at that position anyways, but then again, I don't remember who all was available and what our immediate needs were either......whether we could have traded back about 5 spots and still gotten him.....whatever.

That number one pick wasn't ours. We used our top pick on Steve Walsh in the supplemental draft the year prior.

I'm curious what we gave up to obtain that #1 overall pick. These days, it would cost two whole draft classes ... and maybe more.

So, was Steve Walsh worth what turned out to be the #1 overall pick? :p

Dallas had worse records after drafting Too Tall and Aikman. Aren't #1 overall picks supposed to make the team better.

Steve Walsh....definately not.

As far as #1 picks in general, it usually takes time....ESPECIALLY for the QB position to get acclimated to the NFL.....whether some on here want to believe that or not.

He was not a classic All Pro Hall player - but a very steady and disrutive DT - We won a lot og games and he was a big part of our Dline dominance. I say it worked out just fine!

That is a pretty weak class. Not a Hall of Famer in the bunch.

Maryland filled a big need and was a fine player. If they don't take him #1 overall, they probably don't get him in any kind of trade down.

Harper was the Jewel in that class of Dirt, Eric Swann was another I liked, but injuries took him out.

Very good player for us but never lived up to the overall #1 pick in that draft. Regardless of where he was picked I'm still glad he played for us.

I agree thre also. I actually have a custom made Russell Maryland Jersey and it was the first Cowboys jersey I ever owned. And it's still my favorite. Maryland never got the glory or the stunning numbers, but man, if you ever needed a DT to stop the run, Maryland was the BEST in the NFL at it in his prime. He was truly our unsumg hero on D. My opinion? He WAS worth the pick - His contributions were very critical to our team's success.
