I'm afraid Curtis Martin will pass Emmit
Before this year, I thought Emmit's record would stand a long time. But Curtis Martin rushing for 1697 yards this year changed my opinion. It's hard to believe, but he only needs to have 4 seasons averaging 1250 yards and he will catch Emmit. This year, his 10th season, was his best in total yards and in avg. yards per carry! Like Emmit, his career has been marked by consistency. He has only missed 4 games throughout his career due to injury (at that point in his career, Emmit had also missed only 4 games due to injury). Ten straight years over 1000 yards. Like Emmit, he is not spectacular, but he is a football player. Tough, determined, heart of a champion.
After 10 years, Emmit had 13,964 yards. Curtis has 13,366.
I'm not saying it is a sure thing, but it is now a very real possibility that Emmit Smith's amazing record will only last 4 or 5 years. Wow.

But Martin is already talking about retirement himself, indicating he may play 1 more season.

Like someone mentioned in the other thread. Records are meant to be broken. And Martin and LT are as good a guys as any to break them. Martin has already said he probably only intends to play two or so more years, so why worry. Just like Jim Brown passed the torch to Payton and Payton passed the torch to Emmitt, I'm sure Emmitt will be just as gracious to whoever reaches that accomplishment if and when that day comes.

I agree with you, records are meant to be broken and sooner or later chances are Emmitt's record will fall. Only sport record I can think of that will be almost impossible to break is Nolan Ryan’s strike out record.

It sounds like in some people's minds Martin has suddenly snuck up, but I've been thinking about this possibility for a few years now. Like you very accurately stated, he is extremely Emmitt-like in his consistency, attitude, work ethic, and quiet confidence. He's also been counted out and labeled "finished" more than once, just as Emmitt was. He is exactly the type of guy that you'd want to break the record, since records indeed are meant to be broken. I guess we all just wish Emmitt could hold onto it a bit longer than a handful of years.

I guess the guy who bought Mark McGwire's HR record-breaking baseball thought that too. Breaking someone's record doesn't lessen the accomplishment of the people who did it before them. And even though Martin does indeed come as close anyone to breaking the NFL rushing title and Holmes and Faulk have both already broken his single season TD rushing record. It'll take a rare breed to accomplish ALL the things that Emmitt was able to do in his career.

Or Cy Youngs win record of 511. There is only one other pitcher that made it to 400. Maybe his loss record as well of 316.
I used to think that no one would break George Blandas record for career interceptions of 277. There is a certain QB within striking distance.

18,355 rushing yards minus 13366 equal approx 5,000 yards. That's any combo of the following:
1) 3 x 1700 yard average seasons or
2) 4 x 1250 average yard seasons or
3) 5 x 1000 seasons or
4) 6 x 825 yard average seasons.
How much longer can he hold up? He's already 10 years in. He won't likely make 14 or 15. So, how do you figure he will average 1700 yds if he lasts 3 more years?
AIN'T HAPENIN.

Although the record will be broken, at some point, it won't be Curtis Martin. He is too many yards down, with the clock ticking. He may be the one that comes the closest for a while, but that's all.

Martin is a year older after his 10th season than Emmitt was after his 10th. At the same age, Emmitt had exactly 1,800 more yards than Martin.

Records are made to be broken. Evolution dictates it.
The four minute mile was once thought impossible. Roger Bannister changed that. Now, the world record is sixteen seconds under his time at 3:43. That's four laps around a quarter mile track in less time than it takes for a song to play on the radio.
Athletes will get bigger, faster, stronger. Someone will run close to a 4.0 40, jump higher than 60 inches.
It will happen. Time is the only obstacle.

Dooms and do not forget Nolan Ryans 7 no hitters that is another one up there I do not see anyone breaking anytime soon. It is hard enough for great pitchers to get one let alone 7 of them
