XBox 360 Red Ring of Death
As a new XBox 360 owner I have been reading a lot about the dreaded Red Ring of Death. Over the last few years i've had a few friends online tell me about how they've all experienced it and how they don't know anyone whose every owned an XBox 360 who hadn't.
Now I have a friend who just had his give him the RROD after owning his XBox 360 since the night it came out. He never had a single issue with it till then and got years of game play out of his.
My nephew has had his 360 since right about the time they released and he's yet to experience any issues with his.
So what I'm wondering is if there is anyone here whose had to deal with the RROD.
If so how long did you have yours before it happened?
Has it happened to you more than once?
What did you do to fix it?
Are there any tips people could provide to help prevent this issue?
I'm curious cause it sounds like it really sucks to have this happen and I'm curious as to how the likelyhood of the problem can be lessened and such.

My brother and I each bought one at launch, which was like 5 years ago or something. His RRODed last fall, and mine went a couple months ago. I think there's a 2 or 3 year warranty if you bought it after a certain date, but a lifetime one if you bought it before. Mine was before that date, so I didn't have any issues getting it replaced. Got it back in about 10 days.
But when I went to the UPS store to send it back -- which Microsoft pays for BTW -- the guy in there said he didn't think he'd gone more than a couple days without seeing one shipped out. I didn't even have to tell him what I wanted. Basically walked in there, laid the box on the counter, he printed my tracking receipt, and I left.

My wife got it at Hastings and they don't do the extended warranties there so I've got the 1 year warranty that comes automatically with it but I've got to call, or something, and find out what I've got to do in order to extend the other 2 years onto it.

The early Xbox360s had the problem bad. Microsoft is a software company making hardware. Oops. They changed the design, so that the RROD doesn't happen nearly as often. Estimates I saw of the early design failures were in the 30-40% range. And they were losing money selling them to begin with.
If you got a new one, you shouldn't have a heightened chance for disaster, only the usual standard chance for it....

I have had it before
Heat and dust are generally a contributing factor to RROD the add on fans can help plus in general Electronics last longer if you dust them often and keep them cool that includes laptops and PC's

I had it twice. The first time was after about 2 and a half years, and the 2nd time was about a year after that. No issues since (thought I rarely use it anymore). To "fix it" I just called Microsoft, got a box sent to me, sent it to them, let them take care of it and wait 2-3 weeks to get it back.
RROD still has a 3 year warranty even on new machines I'm pretty certain.

Thanks for all the information everyone. I've found from reading, and whats been said, that it seems like, to me anyway, that a lot of times people had these problems because they didn't do one of a handful of things.
1) Didn't keep it cleaned up from dust regulary, 2) didn't keep it in a well ventilated area, 3) didn't keep it cool to help with overheating, 4) and playing for insanely long amounts of time and/or leaving the machine on for hours at a time. (This seems like the thing that most did them in)
So I'm going to try and do everything i can to reduce those issues, as I've seen from tips online, and with my unit being one of those with the new Jasper Chipset in it I'm hoping I'll have a really good run with the unit.
