Default Jefferson re-signing with Spurs

All signs point toward Richard Jefferson(notes) re-signing with the San Antonio Spurs today, according to San Antonio Express-News.

Jefferson, of course, could have had $15.2 million in salary next year with the Spurs but he opted out in order to cash in on Historic Free Agent Year 2010. That dough never came for him and now he's re-signing for a lot less, the paper reports.

The deal will have him in San Antonio for at least three more years and eventually make him more than he left on the table, a source tells the Express-News.

I think he did it on purpose ...... to avoid the undeserved hatred that a guy like Roy Williams has with the fans.

Now he will look like a team player.

He actually made more this way. He wasnt good enough to get a pay-day in 2011.

So by saving the Spurs some money this year he gets a ton more in the back end.(giggidy)

Ill give the Spurs credit for not reneging on the wink wink deal. Pretty mediocore player got a huge deal

Yep, plus with the lockout coming after next year, players want the stability of being locked in long term because no one knows what the next CBA landscape is going to look like.

Despite labeling myself a "realist", no one understands my pain or appreciates my special truth. Stupid world.

it was god for the spurs, in all honesty they werent gonna get anyone much better in the open market, plus they were able to use his birds rights to sign him without greatly affecting the team's salary cap. he will do much better this year, most players improve greatly in their second year under gregg popovich's system. with the addition of splitter and our draft pick anderson i think we could compete this year for the 2 seed and then who knows what happens from there

LOL at those who think Jefferson screwed up. He got more in guaranteed money; the Spurs lowered their cap hit for him this year; everyone won.

Jerry Jones: "I don't know when I've ever seen a player impress our staff without having played in a ball game any more than Matt Johnson."
