Most risky posistion to draft in first round? - Dallas Cowboys Forum

I was just wondering peoples take on the posistion that generates the most first round busts besides QB. It seems like there has been an awful lot of D Lineman that have not lived up to being a first round pick. Tough for scouts to evaluate how they will play at the next level? They have to play in a scheme that is not suited to their strenghts? Maybe they are "projected" to be able to add weight and strength? I'm not sure but it seems like for every Warren Sapp there is three John Sullivan's. So what posistions has the highest rate of washout for first round picks?

I think this year, the risky picks are: in order
1) QB, not a QB in this draft without some serious question marks and also given their projected position in the draft, top 5
2) DL, I have reservations about every DL in this draft, both DTs and DEs. I think there will be several busts
3) WR, I think MW will be the gamechanger from this draft but he's been away from football for a year, Braylon comes from a long line of U of Mich WR busts, after that the rest could all be stars or duds

A few weeks ago, I published some extremely in-depth and thoughtful essays on the risks of drafting WRs. It's a very risky position to pick in the first round, especially if it's a receiver with attitude problems.

Not very risky drafting WRs nowadays. The NFL has made it extremely easy on WRs lately. DBs on the other hand...

I believe OL has the second highest failure rate. Tony Mandrich, Pat Harlow, Antoine Davis, Charles McRae, Ray Roberts, Bernard Williams, Eugene Chung. As Parcells has said many times, you get guys out of college who are used to being just the biggest guys on the block and are used to mauling people with brute strength. In the NFL they realize they have to use footwork, leverage and technqiue and many can't do it. The Colorado vs. Nebraska game here Colorado just ran the same trap play behind Gurode over and over again for was maybe the most dominating performance I've ever seen from a college offensive lineman. Everyone made Robert Gallery out to be a guy who was going to dominate from Day 1, and he struggled pretty badly last year.
