Culpepper/Henson
I just chose Culpepper as my example...... a host of QB's/franshises have been in this situation. Now I realize Culpepper and Henson did not travel the same paths--- but does anybody remember Culpeppers first year in Minnesota (1999) when he didn't play @ all behind Jeff George??--- and when he did play in spots.. he looked miserably lost (as most rookies do)?? I'm sure we all remember Denny Green making a bold move in releasing George and going with Pepp as the leader of the team the following season the rest is history! I don't wanna compare the team Minny had around Pepp @ the time... my point is you can't protect potential forever and you can't always be "safe."... I think it's time to let the kid get out there.. I'm willing to support that decision..

1 season is not forever. There have been many QB's who did not start right off the bat but instead sat and learned that is what Dallas is doing with Henson and I think it is the best thing for him.

We're not a very good team right now. Henson's going to struggle regardless of the weapons he has around him. The Ben Roethlesberger thing doesn't happen very often. So why not let Henson struggle why we're bad instead of having him struggle when we're good and have him potenially compromise what might otherwise be a good season.
If that makes any sense...

Dallas very well could give Henson a chance this coming season but having him sit last year was not a mistake it was a smart thing to do considering the kid had not been playing for a while.

Wish he would have gotten a few more snaps...a series here..a series there
I think they would have had more info to coach him up this off season

Given his limited time back into football I'm not sure that would have made much of a difference. This will be Henson 2nd off season with the team and I do think he will get his shot this year.

culpepper set his first season,so did henson.henson's second season has'nt even got here yet.if he's ready he will get to play.but it's a little hard to compare a 1st rnd pick staraight out of college to a 3rd rnd pick who has'nt played much football.

Randy Moss, Cris Carter, Jake Reed, Robert Smith, Korey Stringer, etc., etc. Makes for a nice comfort zone, IMHO.

But him sitting 2 1/2 years may have stunted the Jets team.

yea but if he came in in his first year, maybe even his second, and started taking sacks and forcing the ball would he be the same player now?
look at David Carr, looked great at Fresno State, came into the league, got sacked 84 times in his first season and looks to have stunted his growth.

I agree... I actually was not on the HENSON MUST START NOW bandwagon of last year when our season started to wither... I just really think 1 full year followed by one complete offseason of film study/practice/preperation/mini-camps/preseason etc.. should be enough for a talented QB.. if Henson is the real deal .. I would like to find out.. there's a delicate balance of protecting vs. playing.. and this must be handled wisely. I brought up the Culpepper situation.. because my point is .. IT ALMOST ALWAYS SEEMS like it's too early for a young QB... Carson Palmer... Daunte Culpepper.. etc.. I just think it's Henson time..

I agree and think Henson will actually go into camp with a real shot at competing for the starter’s job. I think the ball is now in Henson court and he has to show he is ready to take over. I think he will!

I definitely think it's in the plan to get Drew some serious playing time this year. I see him getting alot of cleanup duty early on. If he's on track, that time will increase. A 4th qtr. here and there, then comming in after the half. His play during these stints will determine the amount of time he spends on the field. Hopefully, he'll be starting by mid-season. By the end of the year, we'll know what we've got.
Sure, letting him ride the pine for another season couldn't hurt him but to me that's an awful long time to carry someone without finding out what you've got, even if he's not costing us much.
Providing JJ isn't BS'ing us all, the Cowboys are going to receive a MAJOR infusion of talent beginning with F/A then ending with what we all hope is a good draft. Alot of holes will be filled. IF Henson proves to be the chosen one, it's very important he be on the field to get comfortable running the offense & LET IT GET COMFORTABLE WITH HIM even if he doesn't have a great year. This would do wonders for the cohesiveness of the unit the following season. With yet another F/A and draft under our belts, we would then be 'In like Flint.'

I not be shocked to see him as the opening day starter depending of course on how he is coming along. I don't think Parcells gave up a 3rd rd pick to sit Henson on the bench for the rest of his career.
